I was never an actual member. I remember there was a group(even here in Southeast Missouri) Might still be in existence, but I'm not certain. My friends and I saw them putting on a show outside our local Nat Guard armory (circa1982-84 range). The guys in padded armor, helmets, etc. just beating the Hell out of each other. Looked pretty cool to us D&D kids. Of course we weren't being pounded. hehe One friend of mine joined up with a local group in highschool for sure. He would attend regular meetings, and play Rolemaster with some of the members(including a British transplant who was in our "Red"neck of the woods. Never quite sure how she ended up her, but she's a delightful woman. Anyway, I went to a few meetings in my senior year, and attended a yule feast at a local church. That's as far as it went for me, however. Was fun, but I was too chicken sh*t to consider the combat angle. D&D was close enough for me.

Re: Anybody in or were in the SCA?
I've been a historical reenactor for over 30 years. In that time I've done everything from SCA to WWII reenacting, film extra, and even war games with the national guard.
My childhood was busy.

Not SCA, but I was an American Civil War reenactor for 8 seasons....14th Brooklyn Militia, 1st Corps, Army of the Potomac.

I was in the SCA back in the mid-80s and then again in the 90s. Kind of cool stuff, though they did tell Mac he couldn't play a Hobbit even though he promised to have hair on his feet!.

I just don't see the appeal of people getting together to beat the crap out of one another with wooden swords. Now, dressing up in wool and burning black powder shooting at dudes in grey, THAT is fun.
::sigh::
I miss it sometimes, especially those times we (the Federals) would march onto the field to the sounds of Scottland the Brave on bagpipes!

Actually, beating the crap out of other people with wooden swords is lots of fun. Getting hit isn't quite as cool so you gotta' figure out how to stop that from happening.
Smashing some charging fool in the head with a greatsword and watching him drop like a sack of taters? Now that's what I call a good time!
I once was also a member back in the early- to late- eighties, and a Shire Reeve to boot.
However political considerations (i.e. society backstabbing, ambitions, and way serious attitudes by a few newer members of our local group) led to my resigning as Reeve and led to me eventually quiting the society.
It was fun though in the early days when I first joined.

I've seen, or heard about that happening in all sectors of life. This is not always the case, but it seems like people spend their lives trying to join motorcycle clubs, country clubs, SCA, church groups, etc., and they end up making themselves miserable enduring the "politics", rules, corny by-laws, etc. And, for what? Just to be apart of some club, headed up by somebody who was a nobody. hehe *DISCLAIMER* Not saying all groups and organizations are bad, but some riddled with these sorts of problems.

Yes, yes, tease the Federal with the .58 calibre musket and bayonet.

concobar,
Not to change the subject much, but are you a member of the GAF by chance?
I used to do a little Civil War reinacting myself, of course I was wearing gray (or butternut on a few occasions). We might have enchanged a volley or two.

*snickers* Ground pounders. You'll never catch us cavalrymen.
(C company 1st US Dragoons/Cavalry)
Although I was once an infantryman with the First Minnesota when I used to lurk around Fort Tejon.

Gideon,
Don't you mean C Troop!
In the cavalry, companies are called troops. At least in the CSA calvary, as well as the U.S. Army. Of course, maybe you boys in the dragoons are different.
Go 3rd herd (3rd Armored Cav Regiment)!

Bah, but only the Federals had two regiments of snipers, Berdan's 1st & 2nd US Sharpshooters!

Can't argue with you there.
I have always felt that the uniforms from the civil war were the finest. If I had a say, and i don't, in the matter the current dress uniform for the US Army would be as close to the union blue uniform as possible. I always thought my dress greens looked lame.
edit to add
I was 3/7 inf mech.

Nope. Meant what I said.
Btw, the Dragoons were the first elite light mounted infantry in the US that required natural born citizenship to join. They came from the best of families, trained in sword, spear and artillery. They were formed in 1822 from Mounted Ranger battalions not a mile from where I am living now (Fort Gibson). The dragoons also were the origins of todays modern first cavalry tank and air corps.
Just an fyi and all. ^_~`
