Possible Combat Maneuver System/Feat

Post by yipwyg2 »

I just got From Stone to Steel, basically a huge indepth book on Weapon/Armor from various timeframes and areas. They have an interesting way of handling some maneuvers for combat without resorting to feats.

One of the prestige classes, The Duelist, has a skill called Fencing. You use the fencing skill as a way to handle things you can do in fencing. For example

Riposte: If an opponent misses you, make a Fencing Skill Check, DC = 10 + opponents Fencing Skill or BAB (whichever is higher), if you succeed you can make an attack of opportunity against him.

Now this might be a great way to bring in "feats" into C&C. Basically some method that a character can obtain a fighting style, then while using that style he can accomplish the maneuvers using that style.

Riposte would be, opponent misses you, you can make a Dexterity ability check, CL is the opponents HD, if you succeed you can make a free attack against him.

What do you think.

Sorry if this seems like rambling, I just got this book and a bunch of ideas are jumping in my head. I only wish this was the default method in 3.x, instead of thousands of feats/prestige classes to accomplish the same thing.

I think you are getting your D20 in my C&C.

If you want to incorporate such things, go for it. I would caution that you playtest it, and probably make the Riposte work something like: The opponent has to miss you by more than 10 (or something equally bad) or the attacker is not off-balance enough to grant a free attack.

hehe. I can see where one might think that way.

However, I think it would add a bit of interesting cinematic combat options using the Siege engine without having to resort to actual feats. I think feats sometimes unbalance reg D&D 3.x due to the combos.

With it you could make characters have different fighting styles (fencing/Kendo etc.), without all the complications feats bring in. I mean you still have trip, grapple, etc maneuvers in C&C, this would just add some more maneuvers that you would have to earn/buy into.

It would be like adding weapon proficiencies from RC or 1st/2nd editon.

Well, if you're interested... I did create some new maneuvers for use with C&C, which can be found through my signature. It should be called "New Combat Maneuvers" or somesuch.

yah, maybe if they roll a 1. That way it wouldn't happen on a too frequent basis.

Like I said on ENWorld, very workable. May take some fine tuning, but it will work.
Since its 20,000 I suggest "Captain Nemo" as his title. Beyond the obvious connection, he is one who sails on his own terms and ignores those he doesn't agree with...confident in his journey and goals.
Sounds obvious to me! -Gm Michael

Conan RPG has some neat fighting moves too. Although I hear they are quite deadly.
