*snorts* It should have ended with the inclusion of the Raising of the Shire.

I don't fault Peter Jackson for cutting the films the way he did for a mass audience - I'd read these from childhood on and I really like the movies too... from a filmmaking point of view having 30 minutes or more extra narrative after the climax of your film is hard to pull off in cinema as opposed to a series of novels....

but...

Having said that I do wish he had shot the Scouring of the Shire and put it into extended versions for us geeks who really wanted it.... not to mention Tom Bombadil in Fellowship as well. http://johnwright281.tripod.com/

Thus the question of "what about the eagles?!" is answered!

But I do agree, seeing the scouring of the shire in the extended cut would've been awesome.

I thought Peter meant "razing" rather than "raising".
Since its 20,000 I suggest "Captain Nemo" as his title. Beyond the obvious connection, he is one who sails on his own terms and ignores those he doesn't agree with...confident in his journey and goals.

I think I will use this as a future example of "thinking outside the box" rather than within.

Good stuff.

Freinds and I had the same discussion years ago, about how much easier this would have been.

While I love the LOTR films, I do hate... and I mean HATE about 10 minutes of them. The 10 minutes I dispise are what PJ did with Saruman... it felt so... so..., cheating-like.

From a movie point of view, I can see the reasoning for a climatic ending, and then not following up with a less climatic ending... but these are the GD LOTR books here. I think you have to respect the material, and PJ did say he wanted to respect the material like a thousand times during the filmmaking process. If that is the case, WHY O' WHY kill Saruman in that way and totally get rid of the scouring of the Shire?!?!?! WTF. If you respect the material, respect it enough NOT TO CHANGE IT just because PJ "didnt like it." Drives me nuts, man.

I could live with it, when compared to what the theatrical release did with Saruman. That was a mind-numbing travesty.

I wish I could take credit for this find, but alas my girlfriend emailed it to me. I was so amused by it I had to share.

I think the LoTR ovies should be seen as Peter Jackson's interpretations of the books. With that persepective I can live with his Artistic Licence a little more. But yes the whole killing of Saurumon falling from the tower was lame.

A few of his "artistic licenses" annoyed me because they seemed less inspired by fitting things into the 3 hours alotted than by, well, I guess the director's desire to make them his own. IMO, If he wanted them to be his own, then he shouldn't have filmed someone else's work.

It should have ended thusly:

Sauron found the fat hobbit, Frito, laying his furry toes upon the frisky elven lass, and in depserate loss of control, smote him with his noodle. Then, taking the Bling Ring, uttered the phrase Nulak-Kiz-Nim, and the world was his, forever. Amen. Halleluah!

Otherwise, the eagles thing wouldn't make sense.

Oh no, not this one again. First time I watched it, I had this tune in my mind for days and couldn't shake it and some of the images!
