STARSIEGE

Post by Treebore »

You know, I am not positive, but I do believe the old STARSIEGE is still trade marked. You may want to verify this, if you haven't already.

If it is still trademarked you better change it up a bit. Like Star S.I.E.G.E. or some such.

I would hope you already checked into this. All I know is it was trademarked, and is still in the time frame for it to still be valid.

Since its 20,000 I suggest "Captain Nemo" as his title. Beyond the obvious connection, he is one who sails on his own terms and ignores those he doesn't agree with...confident in his journey and goals.

Yep, they have used their StarSIEGE trademark as recently as 2005, so their Trademark is still in effect. Plus I have by no means done a through search. However Trademarks are valid for 5 years after last being used, as I understand it, so you guys may want to take a serious legal look at this before publishing Star SIEGE and opening up a can of nasty worms.

Or at least tell me not to worry about it, your covered/good to go.

Considering we had this conversation, ad nauseum, some months back, and also considering that a video game is not the same thing as an rpg, it was then, and is now, a moot point.

I brought this up numerous times during development. All I can say is the Trolls have legal counsel and I can only assume they checked with said counsel.

Heck, I had to go through and do a "find/replace" cause I had changed it to NovaSIEGE a long time ago.

Yep. I am no lawyer. All I know is that the Trademark for the old Starsiege is still in effect, but apparently there is something that makes it a mute point, so that is good.

I'm not a lawyer, and this is not legal advice, but here's the layman's gist:

Trademarks are usually not absolute the way that copyrights and patents can be. They are keyed to a specific industry or field of commercial endeavor. Thus the Ford Agency and Ford Motors can coexist in their different business spheres. The exception to this is the "Famous Brand" which is so prominant as to transcend these borders. For example, if they had gone with "Nike 2442" instead of "Victory 2442," Nike might've thrown a C&D at them. The Star Seige video game however, does not have that level of prominance,

I'm sure they'd come in handy, not only for SS, but for other space games as well.

Yeah, I am sticking with Traveller, and I frequently have ship to ship fights, and use star ports and science bases on planetary bodies.

i just ordered from nobleknightgames a sheet of 1/2'' tokiens for app $2.00. also, have you ever played traveller 2300? they use golf tees and ping pong balls to make ship and unidentified contacts. its preety cool.

the hard part about ship to ship combat in ss is the ships have to move in the same scale. if a ship moves at 1/2 sumluminal, there is know way a ship that moves at 3 in suporbital would ever get within weapons range.

I set all ships for my ss game with a maneuver drive subsystem at sub orbital scale and a jumpdrive subsystem at subluminal scale. that way i can set all ships at the same scale and put them on a 2d board for combat. I made the map with the scale of 1100 m so a ship with move 1 will move 4 hexes per turn. the 4 hexes can also be used as range increments of 0-4 close, 4-8 short, etc.

thats what i came up with.

Heya FDG, I play a number of SF style games. Ships would be way cool to toss out on the battle board. but what about some terrain for personal combat? I've looked on your sight and like what I see but its all very clean like Star Trek sets. What about a dark, cramped spaceport or something like a series of elevated catwalks (sort of an arcology interior)? Maybe cramped quarters like ship interiors for boarding actions

FDG Sci-fi stuff would rawk. Preferably 2D as I suck at putting those 3D ones together.

It's coming VERY soon, very 'Firefly'-ish.

Either you're saying that because of the new model sets, or you've been hanging around Breakdaddy too much.

With only a few props a fantasy tavern turns into a spaceport cantina.

Well, I like 2d counters/chits/whatever you want to call them, and since I've got a sci-fi game on the far back-burner, having some space-related 2d counters available would be pretty nice, IMHO.
