Many world myths have a familiar sound to them because after all...

They are only shadows and aspects of our own creation myth.

Each realm is an interpretation of the first and comes from universal sublime memories that exist in each of us.

The truly unique cosmologies are so weird and out there that they are hard for the reader to identify with.

BAH! If you read the greybox you'll see how hinky that whole thing is. Abeir was never a seperate world. Damned retcons.

Oh, I know the history of Faerun, I ran it for 10 years starting with the grey box. I was just saying the two worlds connected/merged is not exactly an original idea...

Since its 20,000 I suggest "Captain Nemo" as his title. Beyond the obvious connection, he is one who sails on his own terms and ignores those he doesn't agree with...confident in his journey and goals.

I intended to give 4e FR a shot, just can't bring myself to do it.

We'll be sticking with the generic Nentir Vale. Will likely jack some of the FR modules for our game though. They seem interesting enough.

After doing some digging I can't say I'll run 4e FR either. I just scour ebay for the FR stuff I want and be done with it.

Alright, here's from the book:

Long ago the world was twinned to save it from a final conflict between gods and primordials. The gods took one sibling (Toril), and the primordials claimed the other (Abeir).

Ages later, the Spellplague caused to two separate worlds to collide and overlap. Portions of each world shifted into the other. Then the worlds separated again, contact severed, but each having contributed to the other. Perhaps as much as one quarter of Toril now hosts lands native to Abeir.

So, looks like the old term Abeir-Toril stems from the world being metaphysically divided or something way back in the dawn of time. The plague caused a temporary collision and overlapping of the twinned worlds, leaving their marks on eachother. Parts of Toril's twin world got left behind.

Theres a few areas where parts of abeir now mark Toril's surface, including a new continent.

Interesting. I had been wondering about that (heard about that from a friend). Thanks.

The idea could have potential. Depending on if they work it into the already established history of the creator races and such. However, Abeir as a lovecraftain world where things like the Mindflayers, Aboleth and other things hailed from is an idea.

Maybe I was too quick to dismiss it.

Of the things I dislike about 4e FR, the abier/toril thing is not one of them.

What I dislike about 4e realms are the same things I dislike about previous renditions of the realms. I do think that 4e FR cleans some of those things up for me though.

Just not my kind of setting.

That sums up my feelings for Eberron. Some cool ideas in there, but its just not my kind of setting.

Don't get me wrong, I loved FR - it was the setting to dethrone Greyhawk as my setting of choice (though I eventually went back to GH). I loved FR, up until a little after the 2nd edition setting came out. Around that time TSR realized they had a cashcow on their hands and they did what most people would do in that situation - run it into the ground. That, and Lorraine wanted to get as far from Greyhawk as she could, so she was able to do two things around the turn of the decade: get Gary's name off the rulebooks and get rid of Gary's setting. I never felt the same about FR after the early 90's.

I've kind of come around since then, but have decided that if/when I ever run Forgotten Realms again, I'm gonna go with the 1e box set and the FR series.

I skipped most of the 2e FR material. I stuck with the Greybox and then did get the 3e stuff. I like some of the 3e changes since it does make things a bit more bleak and moves back to a more S&S feel. However most of the 4e stuff I have heard is useful in bits and pieces and not as a full on setting.
