Basic Set Release Timeframe
Basic Set Release Timeframe
I'll be ready this winter to start playing an RPG with the kids. I was think about BFRPG but I just took a look at the page for C&C Basic and would really like to go that route.
Any release date or timeframe for C&C Basic?
Thanks,
Narl

While I certainly couldn't speak for the Troll Dudes, looking at The Anvil, C&C Basic is not on their priority list. I would consider C&C Basic to be sometime next year, and not in the early winter months either. I hear you on this one Narl, I have been looking forward to this box set since it was dreamed up. Looks like CKG and some long-delayed mods are getting the priority treatment first.
I'll hope with you Narl that Basic C&C gets here soon.

I'd suggest, if you're just looking for a trimmed down version of the main rules, downloading the Quick Start Rules. It has only the four basic classes (Fighter,Cleric, Wizard and Rogue) and three races (Human, Dwarf and Elf) to simplify things. The levels only go up to 4th, which while limiting, should take some time for your crew to work through.
You cold buy the PHB for yourself to run the game and give a printout of the QS rules to the kids and all you've spent is $20. I'd suggest using the QS rules with Keep on the Borderlands for their first game, if you have it, due to the simplistic nature of that module, especially if you're playing with younger children. If you don't have that module or your kids are older and more amenable to RP, then the two free scenarios on the TLG site should work for a couple of games.
I can sympathize with the wait as I'm chomping at the bit for the CKG, but the above should more than work. Welcome to the Crusade...

In other words, follow Luthers suggestions. Besides, my kid was 9 when he DEVOURED the Players hand book for C&C.

Since its 20,000 I suggest "Captain Nemo" as his title. Beyond the obvious connection, he is one who sails on his own terms and ignores those he doesn't agree with...confident in his journey and goals.

That is the gawds honest truth. C&C has yet to release anything as complete as the Collector's Set. It is just awesome.

Hi Narl. Good to see you around here.
Hope all is well.
And yeah, I totally want to get the C&C Basic Set for my nephews to try. They are ready to CK, methinks.
Rhu.

I appreciate all the responses. I'm not new to C&C but did want to go a more simplified route. I hadn't thought about the quick start rules or the Collector's Set so I'm going to consider those. I'll be sure and post the results of our first game.
Rhuvein, good to hear from you. Hope to see you at the next Winter Dark.

I'm also awaiting the basic for the kids. However I have to say if you keep things simple using the main set it is easy enough. My six year old plays with us and has things down pretty good. I did fudge some. I adapted the High Elf class from the Codex of Erde for her and set things up a bit more simply so she can follow along. The best part is she plays with the rest of the group who uses the regular rules just fine.

While the rules in the Collector's Set are pretty simple, the writing IMO is not as simple. It seems -like the OD&D box- geared more towards people who are going to put their own spin on things, not towards young newbies, etc.
That said, an experienced CK could easily run a very kid friendly game with the white box.

Narl,
Have you considered the C&C Condensed pdf ?
(I think it's pdf only, so you don't a nice, real book, but it's more stuff than the quickstart pdf)
Hope it goes great!

I too yearn for the basic set. I want to use it as a reading tool for Taiwanese kids; they already understand how to play the game (we play it once or twice a week).
As an alternative, you can construct a fairly full "basic set" from the quick start rules, and the free sample of the monsters and treasures book that is somewhere on this site. You can also include the DM Screen sheets that is floating around on the web (on Traveler's site I belive).
I made a nice little CnC lite book with the material above plus an old school ODnD supplement called "Monsters & Treasures Assortment" which has monster encounter charts with full stat blocks for levels 1-9. Its very handy. I would also like to recommend the Microlite20 spell sheets and various other tools to fill in some gaps, especially for people with limited reading skills.
