Non-rpg games people play?
What do you play besides RPG's
I'm trying to start a game night here for the wife and I(and friends when possible), and I'm looking for recommendations for "games for the non-or-casual-gamer". Looking for things which can be played in about an hour or less i.e. after the kid goes to bed. I'd love to play Catan, but I know it's too involved for what I have in mind. The wife is a big backgammon fan, so other abstract games like that are good too.
My first three pics are:
1. Fluxx
2. Carcassonne
3. Adventurer Card Game
all other suggestions welcomed.

Let's see...
Sanctuary - Thieves' World boardgame
LIFE - Pirates of the Carribean style
Clash of the Titans boardgame
and a host of other boardgames, but the three listed are the ones that we play the most (with my kids).

For a short game with buddies, family, and friends, we usually play either Dungeon Twister or Dungeoneer. Both are quick play games, DT being a little more simple, with Dungeoneer being a type of RPG/card game hyprid.
Oh course, when my gaming buddies come over with a few hours to kill, nothing's better than Talisman and a few beers

-Avalon Hill's, Vegas Showdown (a little more complicated, but a very gamer kind of game that disguising itself well for the friends and family)

In addition to Adventurer, The Card Game, I really enjoy playing Dragon Lairds by Jim Ward and Tom Wham. Very fun game that can be played in an hour.

Jim Ward has a small write up about the game in the last Crusader magazine.

Im trying Battleground Fantasy Warfare. A "miniatures" wargame that uses cards instead of expensive figures you need to paint.

I play Texas Hold'em every Wednesday night. I like to get the Chess set out when I can find someone to paly. I play Phase 10 Dice with my clients alot. My wife and I like to get the Scrabble board out every now and then. When I go see my buddy from home, I take along the Heroscape set and we play that til all hours of the night. Plus various card games, such as Rummy, Uecher, and any variant of poker when the mood strikes.

My wife and I don't play much Scrabble anymore, we are both extremely competetive and hate losing to each other. We haven't played in some years.

I get a healty dose of non-rpgs, especailly if you count the games I play with my kids - Chutes and Ladders, Candy Land, Monopoly Jr., and Go Fish. I try to get a game of Dungeoneer or Diplomancy in when I can...especially Diplomancy, though that only gets going probably once a year.

Settlers in an Hour?
Cool suggestions everyone.
I noticed several people put Settlers of Catan in their suggestions. Was I wrong in assuming it takes more than an hour to play?
That is the main criteria for this game list.
I don't want to start involved games that we won't finish.
(BTW we played Scrabble last night )

Usually it does. Plus, Settlers of Catan is not a 2 player game.
Another game to swear off on this list if you are looking for games of about and hour long: Battletech.

we play a lot of cribbage in our family (it's also good for teaching kids to add)
scrabble sometimes, although I have the worst luck with letter draws - try making words worth any points with iiieevo or something like that! My wife loves scrabble.
We have played the Hobbit boardgame a fair amount with our 7 1/2-yr old daughter - the game has almost no strategy - it's all luck. Still, since she likes it, we play it.
any carcassonne variant is also fun.
if we have some time for prep, we play heroscape.
ticket to ride is also awesome.

I'd also like to throw a vote in for Lord of the Rings (the cooperative board game) by Reiner Kniza. Could be 1-2 hours long, depending on the number of players. One of the best cooperative boardgames made IMO, where all the players play against the board itself. Great stuff.

This is a really good game to play as a family. The cooperative nature makes it fun for children since everyone is working together. Arkham Horror (made by the same company) is similar, but obviously a lot darker and probably not a great family game.

Axis and Allies(the game that kicked Risk to the curb in the 1980's), Blood Feud in New York(a soon to be out of print mafia game from Eagle Games-highly recommended), War of the Ring(Fantasy Flight), Railroad Tycoon(the Eagle Games version-I'm not even a big RR fan, but I like it), Circus Maximus(early 80's Avalon Hill game-wonderful!), etc. Others I get out once in awhile...Shogun(or Samurai Swords-out of print Milton Bradley), Risk 2210, etc. Hope to buy the War of the Rings expansion, Railroad Tycoon expansion, Twighlight Imperium and expansion, Tide of Iron, Battlestar Galactica board game, Tanhauser, etc.
I forgot to add Risk: Godstorm to my list. Now if I could just figure out how to beat my buddy at it, I'd play more often.

When I'm not playing RPGs I'm busy with wargames (mostly old ones from the 60s, 70s, and 80s). I do also like boardgames like Axis and Allies, Shogun, etc. I like to play other games like Dragon Dice, Zombies!!!, and other Twilight Creations games.
