StarSIEGE: Event Horizon Wish List...

Post by cheeplives »

Okay, so I'm considering trying to do a semi-regular column/bit for the Crusader where I build Trappings, Special Abilities, Alien Species, and maybe even Planets.

So what I'm looking for are requests for stuff... what would you like to see statted out?

Well, you did recently mention Transformers, so perhaps you could show us some nice Robotech-style transforming mecha. In my dream world where I have time to stat these things myself, I'd already have some nice Veritech planes and Cyclone cycles/power armor ready to go.

I'd also like to see some big ol' tentacled monsters for pulp heroes to shoot their ray guns at.

Thanks!

Matt

I've been brainstorming on this stuff and I think I'm leaning more towards trying to put together some "setting" books for PDF release more than individual equipment... although I might submit samplings of the equipment to the Crusader as well.

Right now I am considering writing the following "setting" books...

StarSIEGE: Cyberpunk. Currently in development. This will cover running cyber style games. Also included would be rules for introducing Fantasy Races into your cyberpunk... I'll call that section "Running with Shadows"

StarSIEGE: BugWars. Play as a frontline soldier in a never-ending war against a horde of insect-like aliens bent on the destruction of humanity. At your disposal are the powerful BounceSuits, tac-nukes, and orbital bombardment. How long will you survive in a world full of bugs? I'm thinking of adding "campaign" style rules to this that would allow a group to build a war-campaign.

StarSIEGE: Battle School. This is my most ambitious concept. This supplement will make use of the Planetary Creation rules extensively. The group will be members of humanity's last desperate attempt to destroy an alien race. Behind them are the greatest minds ever to be trained in the arts of warfare. As these masterminds back on earth plot and scheme, the group plunges ever-forward into enemy space. By combining campaign style rules like found in BugWars and the Planetary Conflict rules, the group can pit these geniuses against the hive-mind of their foes with the results determining how the face-to-face game sessions play out.

StarSIEGE: PowerKnights. After millennia of warfare the galaxy has plunged into a new dark-age. Fuedal states now war over the vestiges of humanity's once shining past. These battles are dominated by the PowerKnights and their Mounts. Towering well over 50 meters, these robotic monstronsities rule the battlefield. But all knowledge of manufacturing and building the Mounts has been lost, so Mounts are guarded jealously, passed down from father to son as the war grinds onward.

StarSIEGE: Rebellion. Join the forces of the Rebellion as they make a desperate final stand against the evil Empire. Dashing scoundrels, dispossessed princesses, and gleaming droids make war against the Emperor and his Deathwatch Marines. More disturbing are the Emperor's Fell Guard, who are well trained in twisting the psychic arts to his dark purposes. This will be a very pulpy game that should be familiar to many people.

What do you guys think? Sure, all this writing menas that none of these supplements will be immediately available, but this at least gives me some things to think about. Does anyone have one of these they'd rather see sooner rather than later?

StarSiege: Cyberpunk. I'd love to see this sooner than later.

Battle School sounds sweet as hell as well.

Well Cyberpunk is about 40% complete and I'm hoping to get it done ASAP... the rest are in concept phases... basically the one that has the most interest out there will be the next one I do.

I'd be interested in "StarSIEGE Frontier," in which the simple act of founding a new settlement involves all kinds of hardships and dangers.

I've one question and one suggestion.

First, what is cyber-punk? I'm so wrapped up into fantasy I missed something.

Second, how 'bout a western in space type campaign setting, ala the unfortunately short run TV show of Joss Whedon?

I like the Cyberpunk idea (I miss playing that game). If you do- then that would add a ton of new "gadgets" to the SIEGE system.

The term Cyberbunk was first brought forth in William Gibson's Neromancer books. Its used to relate to a genre where technology and biology merges. Think movies like Jonny Mnenmonic, and to an extent the Matrix.

Or even games like Shadowrun, and one oddly enough called Cyberpunk.

I spose that can be done, but there is already a Serenity RPG out from Margaret Weis productions.

I'm glad that that sort of thinkin' didn't keep C&C from being made.

Yes, I know of it but

StarSIEGE: Rebellion. Join the forces of the Rebellion as they make a desperate final stand against the evil Empire. has also been done. I would rather buy the setting from TLG and use the siege engine then go to another company, that's all I'm saying.

Yes, well the sci-fi western is one I'll put on my list as well. Heck, I could combine it with the call for the Frontiers game...

And gideon, every single one of my options up there are based on some other "prominent" work in Sci-fi... for those who missed the references:

BugWars is a take on Starship Troopers, Armor, and the Forever War.

PowerKnights is a new version of the original Battletech universe (pre-clans)

Rebellion is of course Star Wars

Battle School is an attempt to create an Ender's Game themed RPG.

I'm all about homages here, not out and out copying with the serial numbers removed. A game based on the hard life of the space frontier mixed with a post-civil war aspect (a la Firefly/Serenity) is definitely one I'd be interested in... have to brush up on my Western/Civil War history to do it right, though.

*smiles* There wasn't anything out like C&C when it was made. ^_^

I got that, I was just pointing out that there is a Serenity RPG. Not everyone knows about it. I've even surprised many a local Firefly fan with that info. ^_^

Well all of this sounds like a great way to explore the StarSiege game. And to be frank, I think that these setting releases will give more casual readers a better idea on how the StarSiege game works. Not a lot of people understand the nature of how exactly to build equipment in the SS game. These settings will make this aspect of SS really pop IMO.

Yeah, that Serenity game left me kind of unsatisfied. I'd much rather get my Firefly workin' with either D6 or SSEH.

I think SSEH would work perfectly for Firefly.

The odd thing is that in addition to the Serenity game, I've seen adaptations of Firefly for about five different systems. (Surely one more wouldn't hurt...)

it appears you are turning starsiege into amazing engine. to that end, i would want a steamspace setting, akin to space: 1889 or castle falkenstein. or, a flat-out humor one like tales from the floating vagabond or even dream park. if you want to showcase the flexibility, you should go to extremes.

With the set actually in hand now, I'd love to see a hardback "Arms & Equipment type guide. Chapters brokedown by eras.

Chapters on cyberpunk equip, big time space age equip, post apocalypptic equip, etc. A handy one-stop resource for equipping the various genres of sci-fi.

DangerDwarf, fantastic idea. such a book would be incredibly useful to me. I've never run a sci-fi RPG before, so this would be a great help.

One thing I'm curious about with this project is how you are doing the firearms.

Are you going the Shadowrun route with numerous specific models that have slight variations or are you going the generic Light Pistol, Heavy Pistol, etc route. Both ways work, just curious.

Also, will we be seeing stuff like laser scopes and rules for various types of ammunition?

Hadn't really given it much of a thought. The Ammunition Special Effect lets people build whatever kind of ammo they want right into the gun... I guess I could specify some types in the game:

Dum-dum ammo: Add +1 Wound

Armor Piercing ammo: Add AP Special Effect

White Phospherous: Add Burn Special Effect

I'll definitely keep this in mind while working on the doc.

Doh. I just read the Ammo SFX and see what you are saying now. The floating 3 points lets you "change ammo clips" per se.

Interesting way of doing it. I like.
