The Marl!

Post by Julian Grimm »

I've been rereading my folio and I was wanting some more info on the Marl. The iron fortresses of the orcs really got me curious. Are we talking Mordor like here? Something more nasty? C'mon, Steve you know you want to talk about this.

I was thinking it was a great location to use material from the OD&D/Mystara "Orcs of Thar" book. I think thats what the Gaz was called.

Since its 20,000 I suggest "Captain Nemo" as his title. Beyond the obvious connection, he is one who sails on his own terms and ignores those he doesn't agree with...confident in his journey and goals.

My thoughts have been something like Mordor but split into smaller warring kingdoms. I may make some map adjustments and make the Marl closer to Outremer and other kingdoms and have the Crusade be into those lands.

Sounds like a good scenario.

The Marl is a huge region of volcanic mountains in the middle of the continent. Its where the orcs came to Aihrde and lived in hiding for long centuries. They had no real political structure at first, living in small bands and what not. They fought amongst themselves for a great while until some groups began to solidify into bands and tribes. From these came all manner of political structures. All this happened apart from most of the other creatures of Aihrde. The dwarves were gone at this point, scattered or destroyed. The goblins wasted in power and the humans not strong enough. The orcs encountered normal monsters and the like, but few of the other denizens. That's why they are so ego-centric and don't understand no accept other societies etc. That and they are as mean as hell. ha

So, are Marl orcs different from their cousins elsewhere? Also what did they do during the Winter Dark? Unklar seems to have been too far away to really influence them. That and his constant nap times seems to have left them open to do what they wanted.

The Marl orcs were enslaved by Unklar early in his rule they served his armies in huge capacities during the Wars (Great War, Catalyst War, etc) leading up to the Millennial Dark.

Later . . . .

The region known as the Lands of Ursal or the Cradle of the World were controlled by the wizard, Unklar's Seneschal, Nulak-Kiz-Din. The rest of that land mass, Aenochia, was ruled by a Devil from the Shadow Realms, The Lord of Sorrow also known as the Lord of Flies. He's the same one who marched against the Empire of the Sun during the Winter Dark Wars, leading a huge army of giants and orcs. Those orcs were not taken from the holds and dungeons of Aufstrag or Ursal, but rather the Marl. The Marl served as his private breeding grounds, and though he did dwell there during his reign he relied upon the orcs heavily. They fought for him in all the civil wars under Unklar's rule and against the humans to the south who occupied the jungles there.

However, the Marl never lost its independence as its lords ruled their own lands, greatly expanded under the very loose rule of the Lord of Sorrow, far beyond the Marl. During the collapse there was little to stand against them except themselves and a civil war ensued between the powerful lords and kings of he orcs, one that still rages today. They fight themselves more than anything else. Though very recently some of the war like elves of the Fontenouq have begun migrating to that region to reclaim their homelands.
