Because we can't discuss this game in 3 different, unrelated threads.

I picked up Fallout 3 the otherday and got about 4 hours of game time in. Fallout 3 is definitely fun, and on par with the other Fallout games in the series. The graphics are 'aight. The gameplay is 'aight. But the story, and the setting are TOPS! This game is worthy, and so far I'm having a blast playing.

Would you be willing to go into a bit more detail, good sir, for those "unclean" and not in the know with the series/game.

Get thee to a store or scour the internet and find yourself copies of the first two games! (I've seen them bundled before and on the CHEAP).
In short, the series is post-apocalyptic role-playing game. I believe both games won various RPG of the Year awards for a great story. Despite the aged look of the game, it is worth every minute you will spend in the world they create. However it's been SOOO long since I've played them, I'm a bit fuzzy on the story. Suffice to say, you start the game walking out of a Fallout shelter! I didn't even know about Fallout 3 but I've now have an itch to load up the older games and play them as well as getting the new game.

RPG + First-person shooter + 3rd person goodness!
If you are into actors in games, so far there has been Malcom McDowell and Liam Neeson. Pretty big name talent if you ask me.
VERY MINOR SPOILER ALERT

Anyways, if you are not familiar with the previous 4 or so Fallout games, Fallout 3 is pretty close to a reboot of the franchise. The year is 2277. 200 years prior, fearing a massive nuclear world war many people put their fairth into Vault-Tec, a corporation that built these massive underground vaults to save humanity from mass extinction. These vaults are built to sustain hundreds of people at a time for about 900 years. You play a character from childbirth (yes, I said from childbirth) that grows up in one of these massive underground vaults. For the past 200 years society has continued in Vault 101, your birthplace and home. But all of that is about to change... One day, your girlfriend wakes you up to the sound of alarms and klaxons. She says that you have to get out of the vault. Your father has mysteriously left the vault, and now the Overseer (leader of Vault 101) is looking to kill you. Why you ask? You don't know for sure, but the guards are on your tail and all of the sudden their is an outbreak of mutant "roachrats" that are running rampant in Vault 101. Leave the Vault into a Nuclear Wasteland you say? Well, it will be the only way to survive, for inside the Vault you are mysteriously hunted and if they catch you, you will be executed. Why? Hopefully dear old dad who is presumably wandering the wastes of old Washington DC (now called the Capitol Wastelands) will have the answers.
While Fallout 3 is a FPS, there are LOTS of RPG aspects to the game. There are attributes, perks, and many skill selections to customize your character. The game is pretty indepth with the amount of equipment and detail for a FPS.
Post apocalyptic, in the vein of Beyond Thunderdome / Gamma World and the like.
With the amount of RPG-like stuff in the game (attributes, skills, perks, etc, it would be very easy to make your own Falloput RPG. Which a buddy of mine did back in the day and it was good times.

I picked up the lunch box edition yesterday but haven't had a chance to play yet, mainly because I have apparently contracted the plague. When I'm not on death's door, however, I will definitely be spending some quality time with my XBox.
Speaking of which, I bet a Fallout SIEGE ruleset would be the bee's knees.

Fallout 3 is not an FPS it is definitely a role playing game akin to oblivion. Expect as I said in the other thread the character system is a little more straightforward than Oblivion's is.
I would say it is an RPG with FPS aspects. But your mileage may vary. However it does seem to play better in 1st person than 3rd person view at least for me.
the voice is acting is very good in places and a little lame in others heh. but that is pretty much every game. The character animations can get a little stiff but not so much as it takes away from the game.

Finally got a chance to play my copy. I have to say, I love it as an RPG in general. The atmosphere is reminiscent of, and just as good as, BioShock and the world is expansive and detailed, like Oblivion but more so.
As a Fallout game, however, it feels like a spinoff more than a title from the core series (comparable to Fallout Tactics, but much better realised). This is mainly because the combat system is so different (more action, less tactics) and the perspective is so different (somewhat to do with the graphics, where old Fallout made you use your imagination, and somewhat to do with the new writers, who are trying to emulate what came naturally to the previous series writers). It's really a great game overall, and definitely a Fallout game, although perhaps not "Fallout, Part 3".
I do love certain parts of the non-grid movement system. I find sneaking around the ruined city, for instance, is much more fun in Fallout 3 than it was in Fallout 2 or 1.

Agreed. The sneaking aspect is much more fun in Fallout 3, where I can sneak, or walk slowly to avoid the baddied hearing me. For good tension and sneak aspects, check out the Springvale Elementary School location. FUN!

Yep, but getting the sound in fallout 1 to work in XP is a pain (fallout was was DOS based iirc) I think I got it to work using DOSbox but Its been a while since I installed it

A few months back (before I ran my Gamma World SEIGE game) I was working on a SPECIAL/SIEGE smash up.. the systems are very different, and after a few weeks it kind of fell to the wayside and has been abandoned for the time being
Although I have used the Fallout PnP 2.0 rules to run a short campaign a few years back
Yeah the rules are a little heavy (be sure to bring a calculator and battle mat) but its More or less the SPECIAL system ripped straight from fallout 1/2

BTW, for those who might be interested in a Fallout paper and pencil RPG, the latest Fallout 3 Guildbook/hintbook/questbook, etc from Prima Games is a PHONEBOOK of all the little bits and pieces you would ever needt orun a Fallout RPG. There's tons of world info, poster map, many more maps, descriptions of all perks, attributes, charts, and hundreds of adventure ideas.
The Official Game Guide for Fallout 3 is $24.95, 464 full-color pages. If you are running a PnP version of Fallout, I would think this book would be indespensible. Also, it's on Amazon.com for like $16.00.

If you're looking to run Fallout on a modern operating system, you might want to check out Good Old Games. (The message board isn't letting me post the actual URL because I haven't posted enough. Maybe if I divide it up into www . gog . com ?) They are a new company who are releasing older games modified to run under XP and Vista. All the games are $6 or $10, and have no DRM at all. And they have Fallout, Fallout 2, and Fallout Tactics just waiting to be played...
I picked up Messiah and Sacrifice from them, neither of which I have ever been able to run properly under XP or Vista, and they're both working just fine for me now. I have no idea what kind of voodoo they are using, but it seems to be the kind that works.
Oh, and Fallout 3 is amazing. Can't wait to get back in and play some more.

GOG rocks! I hope they keep up expanding their catalog but I fear there are certain titles we may never see on there.

I love the game. I have taken the time to do every list extra quest there is and collect all the achievements that the 360 lets you collect.
I was surprized how much I liked it because I normally dont like games that I cant play along with other people.

Dammit man. Now I'm getting stoked. Oblivion is pretty badass, so if it's better, then I might have to look into it.

I think it takes the Oblivion game engine and builds upon it in a way I much more enjoy.
The immersion and utter detail of the setting is amazing too. I prefer Oblivion's genre over Fallout's, but Fallout does what is does so well. It was a bonus that the game controls were so close to Oblivion that learning the controls was a snap.
