Rolemaster & HARP???

Post by Joe »

Whats this I hear that Rolemaster, and a simplified version of it called HARP is being published?

I was a huge fan of the game back in the day.

Any word?

HARP has been published. I picked up a lot of the books at GenCon 2006.

A lot of people have knocked the magic system though.

Since its 20,000 I suggest "Captain Nemo" as his title. Beyond the obvious connection, he is one who sails on his own terms and ignores those he doesn't agree with...confident in his journey and goals.

HARP is not Rolemaster. Sorta similar, but definitely a different game.

Rolemaster Classic is now out, which is the 2e set from the 80's. It's been heavily re-organized, and is much easier to use.

And there's a simplified version of Rolemaster Classic available as well, Rolemaster Express.

In short, MERP without the world, and with a few RMSS tweaks tossed in.

I'm a huge RM fan, but my devotion o the game stems from MERP (my first RMish experiance). This is probably why my preferences run more towards RM Classic (updated/reorganized RM2) and, more specifically, RM Express (a fully playable, lite version of RMC). At 10$ for a copy (20$ for 3, or 30$ for 6), you can easaly and affordably get RMX books for your whole gaming crew.

Although I own all of the HARP line, and think it's a wonderful game, like Rasyr once said on DF, HARP was designed to be appealing to the d20 crowd.

Now RMC and RMX are more to my liking. I actually prefer RMX over MERP. Both strip away the detail bloat found in RMSS/FRP, leaving a nice, simple game. ICE is constantly puting out stuff for RMC/X, like the recent Combat Companion or the wonderful Express Addition (at 2$ a pop, these are the most useful d/l i've purchased for any game).

Feel free to check out ICE for more info on Rolemaster (RMSS/FRP), HARP, or, my personal favorite Rolemaster Classic or Expless!

If you want to give HARP a look, you can check out the free download versionHERE.

Sorry, no quick-stat from ICE for RM.

Yeah, I have a HARP book, but I got it from a friend who moved away and could only bring his personal favorites as far as systems went. And since I have the C&C books, I haven't really taken a look at HARP. Is it any good? Is it worth running? I only get to role-play about one every week, sometimes less, and I can only run games that are truly worth it.

Well personally I was a huge fan of the original Rolemaster. I loved the Middle Earth setting, and was intrigued by the rules complexity.

Harp seems like a more simplified game.

No offence to anyone, but it seems like todays gamers are a bit math lazy.

If math lazy describes you then you probably would not prefer a percentile based system.

Thou shalt not mention MERP, for Tolkien Enterprises is a jealous and unforgiving god.

I have Rolemaster Express and HARP. Of the two I prefer HARP. Is it worth running? Absolutely. If you want a game that feels gritty where the PCs really have to think things through then HARP is for you. The system enforces this kind of feel.

I recently got back to Rolemaster through RMX and love it! I also have HARP, but prefer RMX. I do a review of the system in issue 3 of the Domesday Book, if you want a detailed overview. The system is awesome!

I am a huge Rolemaster fan, I've been playing since 1985. I have run an intro to Rolemaster Classic using RMX the past 2 years at Gen Con for KFG Wednesday Gaming and everyone always had a good time.
