Exceptional Success and Critical Success

Post by AzureaSkyes »

I was wondering if the rules for Exceptional Success and Critical Success are intended to be used as one or the other, or if they can both be used. If both are used does a character who is attempting to gain a critical success also get better results if they scored 10 more than the target number (as if they had scored 2 exceptional successes)? I noticed that a critical success is the same mechanically as achieving a single primary exceptional success, effectively scoreing 6 over. Any thoughts?

They can be used together, but do different things.

The Critical Success *must* be declared by the player before rolling and the player and SIEGE Engineer must outline the effects before the roll. These effects should heavily favor the character. Critical Successes are more similar to Nova Points in that they let the player have a greater influence on the outcome of a particular action.

Extraordinary Successes just give the character little boosts for the player rolling so well. The results of them are made up on the fly by the SIEGE Engineer after a roll has been made. They really shouldn't be as beneficial as the Critical Success and should be looked at more like "perks" to the roll... unexpected benefits.

If a player's roll on a Critical Success roll comes up so high that they would also qualify for Extraordinary Success, I'd let the *player* suggest the "perks" rather than the SIEGE Engineer (who still has veto authority). But this is really left up to the individual group, since Extraordinary Success is an optional rule anyways. The SIEGE Engineer can always just add perks on top of the normal Critical Successes if they wish... giving the power to the player might really tip people towards trying for Critical Successes more, though.
