Not to rush, but...

Post by maasenstodt »

I'm curious about approximately how far out we are from the next print release. Since the announcement of the switch in format a couple of months ago (which I felt and still feel good about), there hasn't been any word. James, I'm certainly not angry or desirous to have you rush something out to the subscribers, but it would be nice to get an update.

Thanks!

Whoops! Sorry I missed this post earlier...

Not going to say anything about dates. Every time I do, something happens. There are two projects in the works right now... one all-new, one a PDF to Print...
Guide to Western Karak: We have a map that is almost done. The Guidebook is in the works, and (fingers crossed) I've remained quite productive on it on a regular basis. Here's a preview snippet of the map. This is a subscription product, already promised to subscribers, however, instead of 24 pages as I thought, this will likely be 48 pages, plus the 13" x 19" map; anything beyond 24 pages will count against page credit. This will be auto-shipped to subscribers.
Monsters & Treasures of the Wilderlands Volume 1: This is a print version of the PDF currently available. Art should be done shortly. This is not a subscription product, but if you wish to use your subscription pages to get this, you can, with no cost for shipping. If you already have the existing PDF, it will be upgraded to the new version.

After those two are out, likely I'll take another shot at finishing the Lore of the Aesir, then the Southern Reaches Gazetteer. If not that, there are several other products in various stages of completion, or something else might strike my fancy... we shall see.

No worries about the timing of your reply - I'm just glad to get the update. Hearing something along these lines every few weeks would be appreciated. I also understand about announcing dates, so no worries on that account, either.

I am a bit curious about the order of the releases. While I could certainly see the Monsters & Treasures print making an earlier arrival, I would have thought that the Southern Reaches Gazetteer or even the Valley of the Dead Queens would be up before Western Karak. Just out of curiosity, could you tell us what led to the latter work getting more of your attention than the others?

The answers for each project are significantly different.
Southern Reaches became the grindstone around my neck. No matter what I did with it, it never seemed to get any further along toward completion. I'd work on one chapter, which would change things I worked on before; I'd get further along with another chapter, and then look back and realize it was crap. And so forth and so on. It became The Project From Hell, and to even try to work further on it was to invite disaster, seemingly. So I shelved it, adn will go back to it once the scars from my earlier attempt heal.

As for Valley of the Dead Queens, I have sold all of 36 copies of the 2008 Wilderlands Jam. While the VotDQ is only one component of the 2008 Jam, it was the major draw, I figure, and the lack of sales shows a distinct lack of interest. I might return to it later, but right now, it's down on the list of things to do... it's hard to motivate myself to work on a product that will apparently earn me the equivalent of a double tall latte for several weeks of work.

Again, I appreciate the reply, and I can certainly see why you'd put Southern Reaches on hold.

That said, FWIW, I think that a fleshed out Valley of the Dead Queens that incorporated more great colored maps from Peter could be a very popular product. It seems to me that the Haunted Highlands setting from TLG has been well received, and I see reason why Valley of the Dead Queens couldn't do at least as well.

Just my opinion. Keep up the good work, and I'll be looking forward to your next release.

Speaking only for myself, I don't buy previews; I buy full products. That was behind my decision to skip the WL Jam, like TLG's East Mark Gazetteer.

I didn't pick up the 2008 Wilderlands Jam, cause you gave out the two character classes as free pdfs, I bought the Monsters pdf, and like Melan didn't want to buy a preview. Especially as I thought I'd be able to buy the full VofDQ soon. So for me the preview was not a major draw, either, though the real deal would be.
