Hello, all!
25+ year gaming veteran, but new to C&C. I've been lurking for a while, but am just getting around to introducing myself. Apparently, like many here, I quickly became frustrated with D&D 3.X. I began looking for something different, a game that would appeal to D&D and D20 gamers in my area, but that had a system that was lighter, freer, and a better fit with my improvisational GMing style. Lo and behold, I discovered C&C!
I will be running my first C&C campaign soon with a new group, so wish me much luck and fortune!

In real life, most people know me as Hoyt (or Greg, depending on how I know them and how long they've known me). I consider myself an old-school metalhead and an old-school gaming geek. I am prior USAF, having served 6 years and stationed at Moody AFB, GA and Spangdahlem AB, Germany. I was an AMMO trooper, which meant spending hours sitting out in a bobtail truck, picking up and delivering practice bombs... and playing D&D by flashlight during overnight military exercises *winks*.
I'm married for the second time in my life; almost 14 years this time around and to a wonderful woman named Karen. She's the main reason I'm even able to be here, as she really turned my life around about 15 years ago. I would be lost without her. =)
Patrick is my only 'child' at 19 years old. I am very proud of him as he has graduated from High School with high honors, and was also the recipient of the Marching Band Member of the Year as the euphonium/baritone section leader for the championship Hiram High School Band of Gold his senior year. He is also the bassist for the Christian power metal band Theocracy, and the lead singer for the local power/thrash metal band Eclipsed by Sanity.
My experience with the Dungeons & Dragons game system started in early 1983 with the old blue boxed set. A high school friend had received it for Christmas ('82) after we witnessed some school friends chatting about it in the library. So my bud and I started our gaming history with another friend and a cousin of mine using a home-brewed generic setting . I have many, many AD&D stories to tell. Someday I'll start a book sharing stories from that time in my life.
I've played tabletop D&D very seldom over the past 5 or 6 years. Early frustrations with the clunky 3E version of the game, and also a fading community of good gamers made it difficult to continue with the game I loved for nearly 20 years. So I turned my attention to Neverwinter Nights for most of the past 6 years. That is where 3.X edition rules belong IMHO - inside CRPGs. It works well there, but not so well on paper.
But I digress... it's with the discovery of Castles & Crusades which brings me here today. And on March 15th I should make my return to the gaming table with dice in hand. HUZZAH!!!

It was 1979 and I was in the 6th grade...It seems like yesterday. The first PC I ever made....He was a thief....I had very little understanding of what was going on but i was hooked....I could see in my mind's eye the sweat running down his face....The fighter and the magicuser I was with, what was going to happen.?.....The kobolds were all around. In those days we had yet to get the"funny looking dice".We had a cup....Yes a cup with numbers from 1 to 20 on little pieces of paper...The DM said roll for party initive.....We had it .The kobolds all around and I shouted that I will attack the one closest....I take the cup and pull out a piece of paper....An 18... The Dm says the kobold yelps and falls dead...hee hee I rolled a 6 on the six side we took from the monopoly game. Then came the box set that hay...."It's the funny dice....oh look a crayon...to color the dice" COOL! Hay what is this Keep on the borderland? ...No mom that is not the devil it is an efreet...No mom it's not the devils game ....Thanks mom for letting me play on...Now it's 2008 and I find this forum...It is hard to think that the man who opened my eyes to the world of gaming might read this. What can I say to you Mr.Gygax? Big swelling words? No just a straight from the heart THANK YOU! The game lives on as my wife and kids got in to it and friends and so on.You have never seen me yet know that you have a friend for ever in SC.......PLAY ON SIR...PLAY ON !...Lets see now where did i put those spell components?...

Hello froglegg. Welcome... C&C bears little in common with Hackmaster. It draws from old school sources, but it is it's own game. I like to think of it as what 3rd Edition should have been.
hth
I agree with Harry, Castles & Crusades is like a good Advanced Dungeons & Dragons 3e. It is both like and unlike AD&D, but certainly more like it than D20 is; check out the below links for an introduction to C&C.
Quick Start Rules
Monsters & Treasure
The Rising Knight
A Lion in the Ropes
And a warm welcome to all the new crusaders! (and Skathros)

My welcome to froglegg as well.
I have found C&C to be more old school (1st Ed AD&D and the old D&D).
It uses a more simple d20 like system called SIEGE which is a far easier, faster, and more of a well flowing system than d20.
I will echo Matthew, and recommend that you give the Quick Start Rules a look over. It doesn't have everything in it, but it will give a good general idea of C&C and the SIEGE system rules.
