Winter Runes

Post by Tadhg »

I picked up the Winter Runes from the end of year sale and have been reading bits and pieces of the adventures/setting. Great stuff, full of Aihrdian (and some Inzae) goodness. These adventures take place up in the northern lands and have a barbarian/Viking mixed with a Lord of the Rings feel to it.

The Of the Horned Gods Winter adventure is high level and looks kick ass.

Add in the whole winter runes/spells/sorcery/totem/lore thingy along with frost giants, rune lords, nomadic halflings and snow steeds and youve got high adventure in the cold northern areas of Aihrde.

Odd thing about the 2 sided map thats included. One side is drawn (a la the Codex of Erde map) and the other side appears to be computer generated which is fine but you have to turn the drawn map upside down to reconcile with the other map (which corresponds to the North-West/North-Central lands of Aihrde on the Codex map).

I see that serleran play-tested these adventures, what did you think Robert?

Winter Runes is probably my favorite TLG product, and why I wrote up my Runemark Class.

Rhu, I can't believe that you are just now getting this. It is one of the best Airdhe/Erde supplements out there.

One of the cool things about Winter Runes is that it is a fin read, even if you don't play the setting. Winter Runes is a book filled with need ideas and imagry. Even as I type this, Winter Runes sits a few inches from my keyboard as I have always looked through it for inspiration. Freakin' cool book indeed.

Great endorsements. While I tend to prefer to build my own settings, I enjoy well-written setting material - as a source to steal from if nothing else!

Where?

Post by Jacopo Mott »

I have been trying to hunt this down on line and I found a refence to it on amazon that lists it as C&C and one at FRP games that show it as a d20 book.

Is that accurate and what is the differnce? Is there any value to owning both?

Any insight would be great, I am finding it hard to reference on the TLG website so my gut tells me it was d20 and is now dropped.

Ah so the cover must just be wrong at amazon. I believe that is the DB1 Haunted Highlands cover instead of Winter Runes.
http://www.amazon.com/Winter-Runes-Case ... 402&sr=1-1

Thanks for the clarification. I wish I had known about this earlier before the d20 license expired. I guess I will hunt one down at some point.

*chuckles* The cover isn't wrong, the title listed is.

I think it is more complicated than that. The title is Winter Rune, the cover is Haunted Highlands, the ISBN and EAN (and all other product data) are Haunted Highlands, the price is Winter Rune.

It is just well....wrong...*laughs*

There's one on eBay for $7 (new). It's a great book, IMO.

Not too much d20 and the little that's there should be easy to convert (and some has been done in Monsters of Aihrde or Mortality - other regular monsters are in the M&T).

As for the spells - very good, interesting listing . . some known and others particular to Aihrde. They look easy to convert.

I guess the bottom line is this ~ if you use the Codex and run your campaign in Aihrde, this books is fantastic.

If not, this book is still very useful and can be mined for loads of ideas and inspiration.

Best of luck.

Thanks for the endorsement Rhuvein. I have used the Codex quite a bit in setting up my Aihrde campaign so Winter Runes looks like a handy "flavor" book in case I decide to launch a campaign in the Highlands.

I have seen a few on ebay as well. Thanks for the tip.

This book is in the line of redos, without a doubt. Up first is Heart of Glass though. Its one of my favorites.

Just picked up and read Heart of Glass a few weeks back. It is a fantastic adventure. The city setting is awesome! Looking forward to the C&C version. Glad you're starting with this one for the first (of many, I hope) conversion.

I've had to regroup here a little. As we cleaned off the shelves of all the d20 material and the Gygax material is left a huge hole in the racks. Obviously I can do little about the Gygax material, but I cannot stand to see all that good stuff go to waste. As I wrote most of the Aihrde material it will get the first going over, along with Book of Familiars, one of my favorite publications that we have ever done. It will need a bit of overhauling however.

I'll echo the sentiments of DD here. I'd love to see all this Erde stuff see C&C conversions. Winter Runes was also one of my favorites.

I'm more interested in Book of Familiars, personally, but would not mind seeing the rest. Heart of Glass is a major contender on the must redo again list, as well.

I snagged WR a month or so back and really enjoyed it; Heart of Glass is on it's way. Glad to see both these are being updated for C&C.

I expect he's looking for the C&C version squire, which I know Steve's still fiddling with.
