What The Heck Are Those Small Furry Creatures???

Post by Joe »

The pics are on page 36 & 44 of the PHB.
Theres a bunch on page 43 of M&T.
They don't fit the description of gnomes, and the gnome looks like Porky Pig in the M&T

No offense, but they look like big eared fuzzy goblins. ...No not him either.

What on Inzae are they?!?!?

They are gnomes drawn by an artist who isn't stuck in the realm of cliche past like some C&C game designers are.

uh huh...if you say so.

Your killing me Peter!

I think they actually deserve their own race description but your the artist.

How would you portray the Jabberwocky?

Or better yet maybe the dreaded Bladderwompus?

Sounds like someone may have been asked this question more than once.

Personally I have been prejudice against them since 1st Edition.

I mean what the heck is a gnome anyway?

If J.R.R. didn't right about them then I don't want them in my world is what I say!

Death to gnomes!

A true gnome is a powerful earth elemental. Which is what I had in mind when I came up with that look. I might just write up my own non nerfed version at some point. Probably when I finish my race classes. ^_^

Actually Tolkien did write about them. His 'gnomish' reference was from the same reference I get my gnome ideas from. Folklore. In Lord of the Rings, there is a reference to elves that work metal, being called gnomes. Specifically the elves that learned dwarf forging lore and made the first Rings of Power.
A gnome, in folklore, is one of the few types of faerie folk that can handle iron safely, being an earth elemental being.

"True gnomes" are a variety of things, depending where you're pulling your inspiration -- some are massive hoarders of treasure and are very evil and others are more "typical elf" (or, Santa-like) but they are also classified as "elementals" in some sources (such as Paracelsus.) And, there are many other interpretations, too. Same sort of thing for nearly all the "fey" creatures, really -- contradictions and differences across a gamut of cultures. That is why its so much fun creating them, and why Peter's depiction is interesting. Never a bad thing to have variants of the same monster / creature. In fact, Colin Chapman wrote a pretty good version of the "mythic gnome" somewhere... maybe in "Colin 'Sez Volume I." It does a decent job of capturing most of the traditional gnomish qualities and traits.

But, yes, Peter has been asked what those things are a few times.

Take the "nerfing" up with Steve. He is the one who wanted the PHB races re-included in Monsters and Treasure -- I said it was redundant and unnecessary since the rules for them were already in the Player's Handbook. I also had nothing to do with the PHB depiction either, since it was done while I was on my sabbatical moving across the country... but, that's OK. I do hope the CKG has some modifications like discussed.

*wry smile* My comments had absolutely nothing to do with whats in the PHB vs the M&T since both descriptions are equally nerfed.
In fact the only gnome that I liked, and used as a PC race for a while, were the sirfniblin or however its spelled from the AD&D books.

Ah, figures you would prefer the smurf goblin. I mean, svirfneblin. They're OK, but I have ideas for my own dark gnome.

I like your image of the gnome. So much more interesting than simply a big-nosed halfling like so many other versions look like to me.

You gave them their own unique look and feel thru the pictures alone. Great work, I say.

Your picture on pg 44 was my inspiration for a gnome druid I played this summer, when I had the chance to play in another CK's game.

Now, now, I played a Gnome Druid in a mini-campaign this past summer. He kicked butt, saved the party a number of times!!

I do. But the gnomes I play, people fear. ^_~`

Gotta broaden your mind folks. Every class and race combination has its fun moments. I should know, I've played them all.

There are only 3 rules... pay close attention to the third one...

1.) Phat Loot.

2.) Mad XPs

3.) Dead gnomes.
DEAD gnomes.

I've never played a gnome before... but then again, I almost always the DM/GM/CK. In any event, the picture on Pg. 36 of the PH is far more inspired than any gnome variation I have ever seen. I wouldn't mind playing one of dems.
