Questions about coolness...

Why is CASTLES & CRUSADES ~ A GUIDE & RULES SYSTEM FOR FANTASY ROLEPLAYING so mint (yes I said mint)?

What you have in the C&C Box set is the total package. It provides a complete, albeit basic, set of rules to roleplay fantastic adventures from.

But could this be it? There has to be other reasons that this box set is so damn cool. I mean it's a slick design, with good rules. Cool, I think so.

So why isn't the C&C Box set more popular?

Perhaps people like having the "full rules" as they are accustomed to the plethora of stuff made for various roleplaying games, and they feel that a game is not "complete" if it doesn't have more than X number of races or classes to play? I dunno... but I think the box set is pretty popular, but not as much as the hardbacks.

Nah...it's just people reminding them this that makes 'em feel incomplete!

Well, I do think it's great for beginners... perfect in fact. If I had no clue and was starting out, this box set would have been ideal. However, I think Serl is on to something. I wanted a whole whack of archetypes and not just a handful... same with the races. 1st Ed AD&D was like that and that was my appeal to the books. Same goes for the monsters...

But if the box set were to have included a system to create other classes and provide just the basic 4 archetypes and basic races... then I think I would end up favoring the box set more than the books. Then again, if the books were not out at the time of the box set... and I was introduced to C&C then... I wouldn't have waited for the books and would have picked up the box set immediately.

Right now, I have two copies of the M&T and PHB... despite that, I do plan on getting the box set but more for purposes of collecting. I've seen it... and it is definately stylish!

Ah, the C&C boxed set. My first foray into the game. I have fond memories of using just that, the free online listing of monsters, and my own extrapolations to run the game.

And who didn't love the +11 shield!

Yes! And the unexplained helmet rules! Why bother bringing a party when you can just bring a tank in Plate Mail, a +11 Shield, and a +8 Hat for a total AC of 27! Throw in a few points for your Dex, and its time to march on Mordor.

The boxed set is certainly "coolness" for sure. For me I like the compact completeness and nostagic feel of it. A great introduction to C&C

We started with it, but I knew I would probably have to provide more character/class choices for my nephews who grew up playing computer variations of D&D and would probably want more choices, so I bought the PH to enhance our game.

The only problem was that i didnt want to "bend" any of the books! GAH

Which reminds me to brag about how I found that I have an absolutely mint copy of the red box books?! wtf...and for some reason i have like 3 copies of the red box... I need to foray into my collection more often!

Nice find on the red box! As for the C&C boxed set, I have marked mine up pretty well and used highlighter pen extensively, along with making notes in the margin. This makes me feel right at home, since my old copy of the D&D boxed set was marked up and highlighted pretty heavily as well.

Not bad at all! I have three copies each of the B/X rules, and the set that is in the best condition would probably be classified as somewhere between Very Good - Excellent. I'm very jealous!
Anyway, the very first C&C game I ran, was right after the boxed set was released and well before the PHB was released. To increase variety, I made various add-on kits to further branch the four main classes into slight variants. I ended up with almost a dozen or so, which added a great deal of variety and was the first thing about how impressed I was at being able to so easily add and house rule the system, straight across the board. I should try and find those add ons and post 'em somewhere.

Edit: rotten spelling...never type before first cup o' tea!

*sigh* ...Boxed set...

Basically, at the time, there was jsut the boxed set for classes, so I made small "kits" that modified each of the four classes into a similar class, but with new abilities. Rangers, Paladins, Bards, Druids, etc...stuff that is now available in the PHB for the most part.

I've lost my compiled PDF that had it, but a friend of mine says he still has a printout of it. Next time I see him, I'll grab it and type up the basics again, if there is still an interest.

I would like to see your kits as well. I have thought about doing a kit workup for the expanded class list as well, just for grins.
