The base xps listed for the monsters in the M&T guide are different from the ones on the chart provided at the begining of the guide. For example; the Great Ape has 3d8 hd and it's base xp is 30, while on the chart the 3d8 entry has a base of 20. Why is this?
I have ideas for new monsters and I would like to know how to figure out xp for them properly.
Thanks

OK, you forgot to add the "bonus XP" for the Ability Types.
A 3 HD creature, base (that is, the bare minimum awarded) is 20 -- that is column II called Base. Then, you decide what abilities it has, and whether those are type I, II, or III. The ape has Rend, a Type I ability. Looking at Type I abilities (column 4 called I), we see a 3 HD monster has 10 XP. 20 + 10 = 30. That is now the new XP awarded since it has no other abilities that modify it. Then, you look at the column for Per HP and see a 3 listed for a 3 HD monster -- that leaves the ape worth 30 + 3, exactly as its listed.
That is assuming the monster uses its abilities to the fullest -- if, for some reason, the monster does not, award based on what it did use. At least, that is what I recommend.
