Post by Tadhg »

bought a new Lexmark printer that came with an inkject cartridge and it was cheaper than the IJ cartridge I went to get!!!

Yeah baby, gotta love computer/technology pricing these days for the consumer!!
[The IJ cartridge was $32 and my new printer was $23 w/cartridge! Oh and it was at Target, hehe.]

LOL, well at $23, it wouldn't be so bad. But I've had my Lexmark Z25 for about 4 years now and it still hums along. O'course, my old HP Deskjet 560C is still kickin' and it's gotta be 10 or 11 years old at this point.

*snorts* I paid about $500 for a high quality Epson that does large 13x19 formats.

Heh, well you definitely need a good high quality printer, I would think. The rest of us have to bring our large/color stuff to work so we can use the company printer!

*smirks* I used to do that too when I worked in the public sector. ^_~`

I have a friend who never buys new print cartridges, just new lexmarks. Works out cheaper for him in the long run. When the cartridges run low, he simply throws out the whole thing and buys a new one.

You know... I've always considered the idea in theory but never actually tried it. I'm sure I'm not the only one. To actually do that on a regular basis is just wrong somehow... well... just as wrong as the rest of this crazy world!

*chuckles* I agree. I don't do it for one simple reason. I'm a packrat. It'd be hard for me to throw away a working printer. So, instead I'd have a shed of dozens of printers simply in need of print cartridges.

Hehe, yeah it might be tempting but I agree. And really it's not necessary. I failed to mention in my little story, that the reason I needed a new cartridge is I let the nozzles in the old one dry up over the summer.

Normally, I use my inkjet cartridge refill kit and inject fresh ink into the old cartridge. It's unbelievably cheap. I buy the kits online, but I noticed that Target sells them and probably lots of other stores.

I'm with Meepo on this one....our pocketbooks shouldn't fly in the face of our environmental responsibilities. I considered this very idea myself until I realized how much waste would result. That and my girlfriend's patented "If you do this, there will be pain" look persuaded me to reconsider.

But the quicker we pollute this planet the more urgency we will have about expanding the space program and look for more pristine planets to populate and pollute.

Being environmentally friendly only delays our progress to forming the Federation and living a happy joy-joy life fighting the Klingons and Romulans.

Do you really want holding back our species on your conscience?

In my experience its not so much the printer is still working as it is "still working, barely." Basically, Lexmarks are known (to me, at the minimum) to have a very short life. They might last a year. They might last 2. But, I don't expect them to go longer than that. Heck, even the new HPs are getting lackadaisical in their fortitude. Just 6 years ago, a new HP printer was a workhorse and would last 15-20 years. Now, they make them to last 3, if that, and you'd better hope you don't upgrade or modify your operating system (had a HP stop working, flat-out, when I switched from Windows 2000 to XP, so I went back to 2000; I should've used Red Hat, but my fiancee doesn't understand it...). Its absolute nuts and pathetic. Its much cheaper to buy a new printer, toss it, and get another one instead of getting the ink to replace. Even if you get the refills, you might encounter problems, like the printer not responding, or unable to tell how much ink it has, so it refuses to print.

Oh well. The recycled society is not new, but it is dead.

Hehe, the old workhorse. I got it after my company was going to toss it in the trash, after they had it for a year or 2. Takes a lickin' and keeps on tickin'! LOL.

My Deskjet 6122 is quite suitable to my purposes. It doesnt hurt that I have a fairly steady supply of free ink cartridges for it and that it has a duplexer.
