For you guys driving... don't get lost!

Post by Dragondaddy »

Some notes from a business trip I took a while back...

The speed trap in Tyronza is serious business. Where the speed limit is normally 70 for the highway there, I slowed down to 55, some woman passed me, and she was pulled over less than a minute after she passed me by one of the two police officers in town. According to Ray, it's a $126 dollar ticket, even if you are doing only 56 MPH in the 55 zone. He says it took four tries in the Arkansas State Legislature to pass a law requiring the town of Tyronza to keep the speed limit of the highway a minimum of 55 MPH... In the past this town of 400 had the speed limit set at 35 MPH on the highway! They employ 9 full time police officers, and had 5 police cruisers...

Hahah I've been pulled over in Tyronza TWICE. How messed up is that. That city was busted by the feds a few years back because over 60% (sic) of their revenue was garnered from traffic tickets. Yeah, don't go that route unless you have to, better to come down 55 to West Memphis, hand a right and go West on 40. Same driving time as its interstate all the way that way.

In the early 90's, some friends and I went to see George Carlin in Memphis. We traveled from SE Missouri, down through part of Arkansas, and into Tennessee. While in AK(not exactly sure where) we saw numerous State Troopers pulling people over. It was insane. Incidentally, if you're ever traveling to Carbondale, Illinois(on 57) watch out for a speed trap either just before Cairo, or after. Almost without fail, there will be two officers working that area. Could be middle of the day, or even later at night when you're going to pick up the new Axis and Allies board game. Only time I got pulled over by them was when I was first visiting my girlfriend(now wife) in Mt. Vernon, Illinois. The limit is 70 in SE MO, but when I crossed the MO/Illinois border, I didn't see the one sign that said 65 mph. Admittedly, I was driving 7 miles over in missouri, which meant I was doing 12 over in Illinois. The speed trap officers got me. I admitted to being 7 over in MO, told them I would never consciously do 12 over the limit anywhere. I think being out-of-state made them sympathize. They let me off. Very civil of them. Also helped that I don't have a police record, I suppose.

You got to Alaska (AK) through Arkansas and Tennessee? Man, fail on that GPS.
