Necromancer Games for version 3.5

Post by dutch206 »

OK. I just finished printing the gaming goodness that is the Revised Tome of Horrors. (There is still smoke rising from my printer, by the way)
I love this book! My only regret is that I wish I had read it three years ago when it came out. So many memories of fun gaming sessions, and a boatload of creatues nobody under the age of 25 has ever seen before.

Yeah, I bought the whole ToH series. Fortunately with C&C they are still viable MM's to use.

Since its 20,000 I suggest "Captain Nemo" as his title. Beyond the obvious connection, he is one who sails on his own terms and ignores those he doesn't agree with...confident in his journey and goals.

I sold mine -- just never really used it for much.

Though, it was a good book.

I take it you mean ToH I, he is talking about revised, which was PDF only.

The cool thing is if the ToH Pathfinder via Paizo becomes reality. I would presume to expect full color Paizo art for it. I also wonder what monsters they would use for it.

I am very interested in reading the Pathfinder revisions to 3.5, but the beta version is almost 500 pages long. I'm not sure I can deal with that many rules all at once.

The Tome of Horrors series are the best monster books on the market for the 3.5 game. And like mentioned, plenty of inspiration for your C&C games!

I concur. I have the print version of the first volume and I have the PDF of the revised version. Fantastic stuff! The Tome of Horrors was my first NG product I picked up!

Yup, adding to the chorus here. The ToH series include some really good critters - good stuff for C&C games, no question about it!

There will be a Tome of Horrors for Pathfinder RPG, by the way, and probably 4e as well now that the GSL's been revised.

Its that long because it includes PH, DMG, and MM content, not because all the rules have been rewritten.

Everyone acts like switching to PF is going to be so difficult. If you switch the PF book will become your new core rule book. You will use it to run 3E material, you won't use your 3E core to run PF.

Since you will refer to PF for your feat descriptions, spell descriptions, maneuver descriptions, etc... your 3E splat books will still be legitimate, and if you like the way 3E does things better you write up a house rule document saying what you wish to use from the 3E core.

The cool thing about PF is it will be only one core rule book, just like the Rules Cyclopedia.

I'll probably pick up the PF book when it releases. Paizo is a good company. Don't plan on actually playing PF, but them guys put out good work.

If my guesses are correct about what changes they will keep, and if their hints about high level play turn out to be true, I at the very least will much more amenable to playing 3E PF. I don't see me running it though. I think I am too much in love with the simplicity of C&C to go back to something complex enough to make my brain hurt, and PF will still definitely do that.

Yeah, if I didn't care for 4e I'd probably give PF a try. As is, I've got C&C and 4e covering my bases on different flavors of Fantasy.

Need to pick up the PF gazetteer though. I keep forgetting that one.

I like how they've combined skills in PF. 'Move Silently' and 'Hide' are now covered by the "Stealth" skill, and 'Forgery' and 'Decipher Script' are now covered by the "Linguistics" skill. A change I can believe in!

I'm not so sure I like the changes they've made to the 11 basic character classes, though.

I liked a lot of the changes Paizo made, and would choose PF over 3E or 3.5. (I'd pick not playing at all over a 4E game). But it still has too much for me, so I'll stick with C&C.

I would run PF. I guess running 3.x is like a hobby of its own. If you are aware of how time-consuming this becomes, have the time and are ready for it, if you enjoy building encounters, tinkering with the rules etc, using all sorts of tools to get the most out of it, it can be really entertaining. If the changes in PF RPG affect prep and game play in any beneficial way, and it sure looks like it will, I'll bite and run it as a sort of "uber-AD&D" if I get the occasion.

I love the changes that PF put into the core 11 classes. This alone put a lot of the power back into the core classes without having ever character immediaty start going after prestige classes with the 3.5 Splat-Book-O-Rama. Since many players in my group still play 3.5 extensively, I'm looking to give it a try. My only problem with PF is that some of the feats are real dorky... Two-handed Overhead Chop anybody? Bleh.

I wish they had done the revised ToH in a physical form. I usually skip thepdf (though I own it) and use the monsters straight out of the original. But it's damn sweet.

Totally agreed: ToH is the best third-party monster book out there for 3rd ed (and thus, OGL games), /none.
