Warning: B-movie Ahead

I just watched this movie called Dragon (2006). It was kinda cool, but you should be warned before you watch it. It definately is low budget.

The acting was actually pretty good with almost Tolkienesque dialogue that was recorded fairly well considering. You could almost imagine that the cast had experience doing stage plays. And that is pretty much what you get here.

The action was shot in mostly close up which is actually a blessing here since there was no stunt work and maybe about 5 minutes practice before the cameras rolled.

The camera work was thoroughly average and the director did a decent enough job of disguising several weak points in the production. I cant help but think that it would have looked a lot better if the budget would have allowed even one more camera and an editor to tape it up right.

Watch this movie if you like: Decent acting and well written dialogue. Or you can appreciate that someone filmed a stage production and used some CGI to buff it up.

Skip this movie if you like: Action scenes. Or set pieces. While we had decent enough costumes the rest of the budget went into the cgi dragon, thus we have no window dressing such as ... buildings or stuff like that. (luckily the whole story takes place in a woodline, huh)

Aside: Did anyone watch the D&D movie with Jeremy irons and Marlon Wayans a few years back? Was that as crappy as I think it was? I did glimpse a beholder in the preview, which almost convinced me to go, but it looked crap-tastic.

Yeah that first movie was a craptacular trek into crap. The second Scifi produced film wasn't too bad, although it did have its moments.

The 1st D&D movie could have been worse, which would have improved it, I think. I mean, it might have gotten as awesomely awful as Iron Warrior, but no, it had to take itself seriously and try to be a big movie production... had it only a few more Ed Woodian moments, I would love it, but, I can't. It is a movie that failed to be bad, and that makes it suck.

I used "we" as in "we the movie watchers".

I/we never saw a single building in the movie. The costumes I/we saw were decent enough.

Yeah, I like both D&D movies, though the first one is more a so-bad-it's-good like.

It took me a while to realize that Marlon Wayans and Jeremy Irons' performances were the best of the film, simply because they knew it was garbage and proceded to ham it up like nothing else.

Oh, the memories. Paid to see it at the cinema, no less! Umm, dialogue mostly at Hawk the Slayer sort of level, plot somewhere between Hawk and Krull.

Not quite as entertaining as either, which is saying something, mostly because it took itself far too seriously. Not exactly painful to watch, but good cider and some mates to watch it with will certainly help the experience.

Try not to pay more than a quid for it. Better idea; watch someone else's.

EDIT: Oh yes, I have to mention that Jeremy Irons is by far the worst in the film. He's not actually giving the worst performance, but that's because much of the rest of the cast are nowhere near as good actors as he is. No, my problem with Jeremy is that he gave a perfunctory, dismissive performance, and he knows better. No matter what dross you get handed to as a script, you give it your best shot.

No, the dragon in this movie was very traditional looking (and very CGI)
