WEG Star Wars and CnC

Post by imneuromancer »

My group wanted to play West End Games Star Wars, so I got out the ol' 1st edition WEG SW rules and we played a session last weekend.

Now I know why I like Castles and Crusades so much: it is WEG Star Wars with an AD&D combat system tacked on (for compatibility purposes). Other than rolling dice, it shares the same fundamental mechanical basis for how to adjudicate actions.

I hadn't thought about it until playing it again, and now I'm convinced of its Truth.

I say this as a high compliment to the designers of CnC, of course.

Funny, I was looking at D6 Star Wars on Saturday - converted Jedi over to SIEGE.

Nice dog AV, by the way, looks like the Priest=Aura album cover.

Had I played the game more often, I might agree. However, I see much more direct similarity with The Arcanum by Bards Games, a game which would eventually become Talislanta.

There's a lot to love about the old WEG Star Wars system. I really liked being able to do as many things as you want in a turn with a cumulative -1 penalty per action. It meant you could do some truly amazing things when you spent a Force point (like navigating an asteroid field while dodging T.I.E. fighters as you're calculating the jump to hyperspace...).

For anyone who loved the system and didn't know, WEG has a line of RPGs using the system. http://www.westendgames.com/d6_fantasy.asp.

I have D6 Fantasy and D6 Adventure, and they read well, but I've never actually gotten around to playing them. Too much in love with C&C I guess.

It is REMARKABLY similar.

I don't know the genealogy of CnC other than AD&D, and the last time I looked at Talislanta was 20+ years ago. But I don't doubt that you are right.

Either way, though, it shows that a unified central mechanic can be powerful and easy.

Yes... one of the reasons why I loved WEG Star Wars is because of its simplicity. When I got burnt out on 2nd ed, I found solace in WEG Star Wars.

I still have all the stuff on my shelf but it remains largely untouched. The only RPG I play these days is C&C.

Sounds interesting, how did it work for you?

I've played with the idea, but never had anything that "felt" right.

Still waiting to play test the Jedi - I literally did it the day before my post.

Gah! I was playing WEG Star Wars this weekend too! First time in over a decade -- I'd finally found replacement books over at Game Empire in Pasadena and was rarin' to play -- my players loved it, even after the near TPK
This is a small world, indeed

I'd always thought the d20 games owed a great debt to d6 SW, as the task-resolution systems are almost the same (difficulty numbers modified up or down by extenuating circumstances), and of course, Bill Slavisec (sp?) was a designer on both WEG Star Wars and D&D 3e/D20.
