Thieve's World from Green Ronin

Post by SoulCatcher78 »

It looks like all their Thieve's Wolrd books are on sale (boxed set for $25 is a great buy).

In case anyone needs a good gritty setting, this might make a good basis for one.

I had been tempted to get it before, but if the books are that greatly reduced, I suppose I will have to now. Sanctuary is a lovely city. Have a link, by the way? Makes it easier...

Nevermind, I found the link

Yeah, some of these books are great. The Players Guide to Sanctuary as well as the core Thieves World Book are worthy. They are all d20, but there is some goodness to mine. If you are into the d20 game, the Weapons Qualities rules from teh core book are not to be missed!

I have 2 of the books and I still ordered this. Even Amazon still has this at $72.00, with UPS ground my order came under $40.00, which was their cheapest shipping option.

I decided to splurge and bought one of each of the non-pdfs. Grand total of $56. Considering the local game store has the gift set at $100+, I'm much happier not spending that.

Already have everything so can't partake of the sale, but I'll add that I love the novels and these RPG books do them justice.

I'm considering it...

Sadly the shipping costs more than the gift set to get it up. Just over $30.

Still... considering the price, it's still a decent value.

I like the Green Ronin stuff but I still prefer the old Chaosium boxed set. The 3e-ish nature of the newer stuff doesn't work for me.

Sanctuary is such a lovely community.
I thought about using the severe injury rules with a C&C/CastleZagyg game because I'm mean.

Yeah, I thouhgt the shipping was high too, and I'm in the states.

Chaosium did TW back in the day too? I may have to track that down....

I'm not opposed to, but not huge on 3e, but TW seems to me a good example of Prestige classes making a lot of sense and not just being muchkin fodder. They add to the setting and classes instead of just adding power. Maybe I'm being unfair to the 3.5 products, I will not profess to be very familiar with them, but it started to feel like every book had 6 prestige classes with 15 cheats, mean FEATS that really ramped up the power.

Fun fact, the last 3.5 product Wizards published featured a feat called "WIN"

The Thieves World stuff does sound intriguing...I actually just bought the first novel, but haven't read it yet. I thinking of investing on Conan RPG, so I don't know how about buying TW. It does sound good, though.

Yeah, Chaosium (and FASA) did stuff for Thieves' World. Have the box set, in fact, but I would not mind seeing what the new novels have added, since the GRR stuff is supposed to include that material... and, if it is, hen its less things I have to write up myself.

How is it that I did not know about this? I've always liked Green Ronin products and this looks good. I've still got the Chaosium boxed set, which was really cool because it had stats for every major rpg of its day, including both D&D and AD&D.

Thanks for the link.

I picked up a copy of the Chaosium boxed set on ebay for 19.99 + shipping so a quick search should fine one or more.

Found one with a 19.99 Buy it Now here if anyone is still interested in the older material.

Anybody ever play the old Sanctuary board game, of course based on the Thieve's World series?

Yup. It's upstairs in the attic. Pretty sure that I've lost about half of those little cardboard coin punch out thingies though.

Hehehe... after some thinking and a couple of thoughts shared by a couple of my fellow Crusaders, I broke down and went for that ebay auction.

I'm still a bit tempted with the gift set but I should try pacing myself a bit.
I was out and about today and also found one of the old Thieves World books for $2 at a second hand bookstore. What was nice was the advert at the end of the book for the old Chaosium set.
Thanks for the link to the auction though! I'll report back when I get the set.

Well, I hope they deliver the remainder of my order -- I received two books, which is about 33% of the purchase.

What do you all know about Green Ronin? Is this a big company or like, 4 guys in a garage and basement?

I haven't received by shipment yet from 4/30, and for more than 12 bucks for UPS (which is like 5 days tops to anywhere in the lower 48) I'm a little pissed. (perhaps I'm out of touch with UPS rates and shipping times, but I used to do a lot of shipping and it was pretty fast and cheap as of about 4 years ago, at least).

Further pissing me off is that fact that I emailed their customer service several days ago and have received no reply as of yet.

WTF?

If GR is a tiny company suffering from a spat of success, then I'm cool, if they're bigger than TLG or Steve Jackson games, then I'm pissed. (does that make sense?)

Granted, I'm a bit of a stickler for customer service, but really, your business is who you serve, not what you sell, so come on people!!!

their stuff is good, right? I'm jonesing for my Thieve's world RPG stuff!

I believe they are a bit larger than TLG. But the slowness baffles me, as I mentioned in another thread. I ordered one of their Thieves World books during their sale the other week and I got it in 3 days.

Well, this is not to defend Green Ronin but you need to keep at least a couple of things in mind.

They *are* a small company. With April 30th being a Thursday, they may not have had enough of a turn around to get it out by the next day. However if they are a very small group to do this sort of thing, who knows how many days it might have actually taken? We'll consider them shut down on the weekend and if you give them a couple more days last week, we are still within 5 business days. I guess it just depends when they actually had it sent out.

And that is assuming there were no problems or errors. If they accidentally sent it Media Mail instead of UPS, they'll have to issue a refund at some point for the difference. If it so happened that they ran out of stock of an item or items you had ordered, that might cause some delays too,

However, on the customer service side of things (and email turnaround), from what I've heard, this seems to be lacking lately. However, I know TLG's isn't the quickest when it comes to email either so I've learned to cut the smaller companies some slack.

That said, I do hope things get resolved sooner rather than later.

If it makes you feel better, know that I'm still patiently awaiting for my RMX Screen I ordered from ICE at the beginning of March. I've eventually got communication but the 48 hour turnaround ended up being a two-week turnaround. They seem to be good people though, and I've already heard that they did get back the package that never made it to me in a very mangled form. They were going to send me out a new one. I'll be happy it I get it before the end of this month.

Even if they didn't get the order out until the next Monday, the 4th, that's still a long time, it seems.

I'd try to get a hold of someone via phone. It may or may not work, but it doesn't hurt to try. Here's on contact I found:

Maybe this can get you in touch with someone who can help you, Relaxo.

I ordered on the 30th too, but wasn't billed until the 4th. I am getting to the point of getting upset again as well. Very similar crap happened during the past Christmas season, including non responsive customer service e-mails.

I don't know if it is standard business procedure, but I received part of my order and then contacted them through various means and did get the second half. A little annoying, but they came through in the end... but, I think I will not order direct from them again, instead purchasing through a reliable store.

OK.

Like I said, if they are the size of Amazon.com or WOTC they should ship lickety split... if they're small... I've worked at companies that are 6-10 people... fulfillment can be a nightmare.

I'll give it another week before getting pissed, but they should have at least emailed back.

that said, emails pile up quickly...

aw who knows?

Amazon isn't necessarily all that fast. I ordered stuff from them last week, Thursday, I think, and despite everything being in stock they told me not to expect it to actually ship until the 14th. Which often seems to happen with free shipping.

Also true.

But FREE.

I was having a bad day and am not as pissed as I really said I was. (yes, I did use the phrase "I am pissed." I acknowledge this)

I'm more like, irked. It's all good, I won't have a chance to read them until the weekend anyway.
