serleran's major eBay coup!
serleran's major eBay coup!
Well, I waited, and waited, and waited, and waited more, hoping to finally see someone selling all of them, all complete, and all with the boxes... which never, ever, comes up (or, I just miss them). So, tonight, I'm browsing around on eBay, and this auction catches my eye -- I mark it as a "watch." I wait for my wife to come home, because I want her to see it, though my natural inclination is to go click click and Buy It Now, like it was tempting me with.... and she comes home, finally. I show her, and we discuss it, and she says "ok" so I go click, and buy it. Awesomeness follows.

Now I'm sad I sold my complete set for $450. Congrats, it's hard to come by for sure.

Nice find! Congratulations, sir!
It's so nice to find something you've been coveting and to find much of it at one time is especially nice.
And about an item's worth...I can sympathize. I had to explain my feelings to my wife when talking about my re-flourishing AD&D collection.
Agaiin...nice find, sir!

Since its 20,000 I suggest "Captain Nemo" as his title. Beyond the obvious connection, he is one who sails on his own terms and ignores those he doesn't agree with...confident in his journey and goals.

It was low, but I sold off all my Talisman 2E stuff in 1999 or 2000. At the time it was cool, but I couldn't pass up the offer. I still wished I kept it, but what can you do? As concobar mentioned, the Revised Talisman 4E is just as good (I personally think better then 2E anyways). And at the rate Fantasy Flight Games says to be selling revised 4E Talisman, most of the old 2E sets should be out in the next couple of years for it anyway.
To think, back in the day I only paid retail for all of Talisman 2E, that includes Talisman Dragons which was $20-$25.

Ah, well, Omote, I can certainly understand. I'll have some spareds / duplicates (which actually makes this purchase not the best for me), but I'll be selling the extras, to make up the difference (actually, I'll trade them in at Crazy Egor's for credit against what I have purchased on layaway unless someone here could use some Talisman 2e stuff) so all-around I am happy. I could have probably gotten them for less, and ~$400 is what a reseller / store would pay... so, based on that, you did well on your sale. I just can't wait any longer. I've wanted these for like a decade and they were all together, all complete, and some untouched (save for missing the shrinkwrap) so it was basically just "too good" to let by.
And, Tree -- this is the most expensive item I have ever bought on eBay. The 2nd most expensive was a lot of Earthdawn stuff that had practically every book in it... that was ~$300.

I did a more precise inventory of all the game components, and, surprisingly, nearly everything was there. The only single piece missing is a single "Craft" counter, which I can easily replace from another T2e game. At first, it simply appeared complete, but I had to count and check against "the list" so I am even more pleased now, since I would hate to have to track down those damn plastic bases or original die.

Games are to played, they are not art and put there to look at. Games shouldn't be an investment, but if you plan on speculating that the pice will go beyond what you paid, then that is another valid reason to not play it.
Games should be played, unless it is with people who have no regard for other peoples property and do many inconsiderate things like, sucking the cheesie dust off his fingers in that is his way to not get peices painted with his saliva based goop, and can't figure out why your so pissed off.

Heh.
I already know I will play the ones I have duplicates of, as they were incomplete... so, now I can have the full game, and not parts and pieces. The ones I did not have, I will read the rules and see if I am interested. The nice thing about Talisman is that the expansions can all work together... so, I can use one and then not, or use three or four at a time, and it only makes the game longer (and a little more complex.)
But, that said -- the person who owns something has the right to decide what they will do with what they own...

Well of course...that goes without saying...or it should.
I knid of agree with Ironside, though, in that a game should be played. I mean, I guess you can put it on a shelf, look at it lovingly, tell youself, "yep I got that," and move on. Sure, you can do anything you want with anything you own. Why own it if you're not going to use it? I know the collector mentality, though. I can see collecting stamps, coins, art, books (to a point), comics (again, to point). But games? Eh, to each their own and all.

There are several reasons to collect something, and each collector does so for many other, often personal, reasons, and some of which may not even seem logical to someone else... just as some people do not like the color red or yellow, or won't eat liver or tuna.
But, I have not yet said I would not play the game... as I clearly will (and have.) I may not use all the expansions, and probably not all at the same time, but that has periphery to do with collecting... it is more of "do I potentially ruin something I spent a lot of money on, or do I keep it intact?" Considering a secondary goal of mine, when it comes to "collecting" is to have a "museum" of sorts, where those who have been unexposed to certain things can see and know the history of this wonderful hobby, there is very good reason to not play them...
Otherwise, I tend to agree that a game is best played. It shows that you love it. That is why I tend to get duplicates... one to play, one to keep.

Just to offer another view on this, a portion of my gaming collection was liquidated to put a down payment on a house. I didn't start this out as an investment, but after a couple of years at it I thought the hobby I loved could be used for other an investment as well as a hobby. And there you have it, hobby turned profitable investment.

Yep, thats how I look at my rock hounding hobby and old business as. All my 4 to 5 ct sapphires, 10 to 14 ct aquamarines, Opals, Tsavorites, Sphene, Spessartites, and other gemstones are worth a lot. They gain an average of 15% in value each year, so I keep them as a "rock solid investment", pun intended. In other words, I won't be selling them unless I am desperate.

Understandable, sir. So I guess the question is this - what determines if you would play or not play a game? Is it just what you posted (to keep a museum, or to not want to ruin/lost bits of it) or is there something more?
Sorry if I sound like I'm prying, serl, I just like to understand some of the reasoning behind such decisions. I had a truly massive collection of D&D/AD&D items earlier in my life. I played, sure, but with my own campaign world and my own stuff...I eventually looked at my stuff as a "collection" instead of "play material" and I eventually sold it all (all except for my 3rd print brown box). I eventually regretted it, and here I am, collecting it again, in hopes that I will actually use it more often.
Now, I've asked myself, "Am i going to use it?" Because I feel that if I don't, I'd rather not spend the money on it and I'd rather it be in the possession of someone who will actually play it, instead of letting it collect dust on a shelf.

I always read the rules, first. If they make synapses snap, I play that game... even if just once (rules sometimes read better than they play.) Beyond that, some things are just rare, and finding a second copy is very hard (and / or expensive) so I usually don't use that one as a play copy... I might actually copy it though, for playing purposes. My wife is a completest, though, and that is dangerous... if I buy "part one" of something, and there are 12, even if I don't want the other ones, I end up getting them because she has a compulsion (either she buys them for me, or I buy them to show them to her.) So, really, what I play boils down to two really simple things:
1) does it make me want to play it (is it fun?)
2) if I play it, and it gets damaged, can I get another one without losing a kidney (replacement scalability)
Sometimes, I see my stuff as a "collection" because some of the things I own I have no intention of playing... some of it is just for historical / personal reasons and some for research or mining, and some is just there because it is "cool" to own.

So, you collect some things without the intention of playing with it? I mean, there's nothing wrong with that if you do. I don;t think I would collect something just because it's rare. For ivnvestment purposes, maybe, but if I was never going to sell it I probably wouldn't bother buying it. But that's me.

Well, when you want to have a museum (one that goes to conventions and showcases the story of the RPG industry from infancy forward, in a way not done anywhere because it is tangible and physical [not that I have the best collection available, mind you, but I may be one of the only willing to do this,)] it does not help much if you do not have some of the key components of that, which, in turn, means some things that are difficult to find, and something you would not want harmed in any way, or it diminishes the purpose. So, yes... there are a very few things I would get to simply own, and not play. But that would be about 5% of the whole collection -- everything else gets read at least once, and then I decide what I want to do with it. In fact, I have even sold off things I knew I would not ever use, and when I get done with my inventorying, hope to thin the herd once more.
There are many elements to collecting.... its not always about locking it up in a bank vault. That, I do not understand.

Well said, sir. You did not owe me an explanation, but I do appreciate it.
And it makes sense. I like to think that everything I buy will eventually get used at some point in my life. If I fell it won't, I try to realize it and decide to pull it off the shelf and try to get it in the hands of someone who will.
And a very worthwhile cause you have going there, by the way.
