Rpg pricing
(This grows out of a thread in The Rules , The Laws , The Chaos.)
So how much is too much to pay for a new game?
What about a supplement or an adventure?

I don't like paying more than $40 for a rpg, if I can help it.

Depends what it is, its quality, and how much I will use it. New items should rarely exceed $50, but the few that have are generally decent and worth it. Older items are potentially collectible, and that is a whole different thing.

Depends on a few factors but generally, I don't like to spend more than 30$ US on a single core/sourcebook product. Modules are like half that at the most.
But these are generalities and I'm also factoring that this is the US price (as opposed to a Canadian pricing) and before anything else that might get tagged on (like a sales tax for instance).

If the RPG is of worth, or seems worth the price, I'll pay bigger money for the item if I have to.
For example, when the Conan RPG was first released in hardback in the early days of d20, the pricetag was $50. It's wasn't the first book to be that expensive, but in the bloat of RPGs in that time period you could clearly see a trend for more expensive RPG books. While that RPG was a beautiful tome, and to me worth the price, to many at my FLGS it simply wasn't worth it at all.

$40 is usually the highest I will go. But the product better be awesome. I have rarely went over that and the last item I bought that was over $40 is now sitting on DD's shelf.
I do have to also add I have become spoiled on TLG's pricing so anything over $30 seems high.

MrsCharlie keeps me on an allowance as far as book buying goes. The less I spend on a core rulebook the more I can spend on supplemet(s).
One reason I've been able to sort of keep up with C&C. One GURPS book (used) and one C&C book (new) and I'm done for the month.

Well, 30.00 corebooks would be nice for the norm, but some are at least 35 or more. We've all seen the 50.00 books, of course. Some(size-wise) were over-priced, but others were adequately priced. While I didn't own it, Game of Thrones appeared to be quite full of goodness. And, The Savage World of Solomon Kane(from Pinnacle) includes a complete rules set(as it relates to the setting), a plot point campaign, and more. It sells for 50.00, and I can't imagine that one being much less. Don't get me wrong, I'd always prefer cheap books however.

I would pay more if the game was a full system in one book.

For just core rules, anything over $30 is getting a bit steep. It's suppose to be a game, not a major investment. If it's a special item (i.e. Castle Zagyg), I don't mind paying more.

What about games with multiple core books to get going? Are folks more forgiving of the "set up" cost then?
For me, no. I don't want to pay $40 each for multiple core books. This is why I am such an advocate of the whole game being in one book. The RC spoiled me.

I'm not talking per book. I'm talking about the game total. The initial post said how much for a new game. Not book.
I see a number of people voted in the $20-30 range so I'm assuming they aren't going by game, rather by book.
C&C for example, is $40 (PHB + M&T). So, are people more forgiving of the start up price when it comes to systems that have more than 1 book to start up? And if so, why?

Makes me wish that TLG would actually go through with a combined PHB and M&T book at some point. A little while ago, TLG was warming up to the idea. Now, let's have that complete game in one book!

That makes sense. So yeah I could go about $60 for start up if it is a good game.

Well most games just require a Players book and if the DM/GM/Judge wants something more then humanoids, then a Monster type book to play. Not knocking any DM/GM/Judge book, but they really haven't been needed unless one is just starting up roleplaying games.
Regarding all that though, I'd still buy a "3 book" game, more out of 'completeness' then necessity.

Holy crap!!! In NKG pricing plans I have over a grand in EM/CZ goodness. I wonder how much they'd buy them for.
