What weapon is this???
I've seen this thingy used in two movies now. Both were very similar enough as to be the same thing. First I saw it in the Heroic Trio , a chinese superhero movie. Then, I just saw it in the Machine Girl which is a japanese revenge flick; (picture I Spit on Your Grave mixed with Kill Bill and a dash of Army of Darkness.)
It looks like a bird cage or an old fashioned lamp on a chain with sharp teeth on the bottom. The wielder swings in over somebody and it clamps over the head onto the neck. The wielder then yanks or pulls until the head pops off. I thought it was totally weird but in an evil way.
But now that I've saw it in two movies produced by different companies from different countries I'm starting to wonder if it is in fact based on something actually used.
here is a still shot from the second movie I saw it in, the Machine Girl:

It's a made up weapon.

I can only speak from the japanese weapon perspective on this one, but it's a simple length of chain with a weight attached at one end. There are in no doubt many versions of this weapon and practitioner could use any viable, or even weird (or Hollywood'd) weight on one end.
The idea for such a weapon has probably corssed into hundreds of cultures over centuries.

Well...I stand corrected. Supposedly this weapon did exist...supposedly. It's referred to as a flying guillotine and is chinese in origin.

Personally, I think it may have been useful for static executions from above or with someone bent over, but in combat?!? Not likely unless it was also poisoned.

Holy Cow!
Quote:
The flying guillotine is also featured in the National Geographic Channel Asia documentary Kung-Fu Killers, which showcases the top ten most deadly weapons in the martial art. The flying guillotine was featured at the topmost position.[1] According to research, the technology, principle, and training for the weapon did exist during that era. However, no actual weapon was discovered.
Apparently in Seven Swords there is a pole arm version as well. (another movie I need to check out)
In C&C terms this weapon would definately be a class only mastery (assassin class) or even use. With stats like the Man-catcher in the phb but with a 10' range. With the added ability that it would allow a death strike even if the target was aware (but at a -3 to-hit, no penalty if target is unaware) and substitutes a reflex save for the constitution save. The assassin can only move at half speed and do no other actions during the three rounds studying the victim.
