The non-F LGS strikes again

So the other day I went down to my non-F LGS to see some friends who play warmachine there. Monkey Girl was there running the store (the one so-named because a monkey can do her job better). A guy comes in and we overhear him asking about the pirate ship trading card game. MG tells him they dont carry it while shaking her head and doing her best to look sorrowful. I couldnt stand it. I walked over to the counter from the game room and pointed at the display on the freakin' counter right next to her.

Dont you have to know at least what the store stocks if your going to work there.
Amazon should pay her a commision for all the business her (lack of) knowledge sends them.

Yeah...something like that is a write-up/ warning. A second time would be firing.

Sounds like she's simply too lazy to actually look, which is still inexcusable for a business.

We refer to this as just LGS (Local game store), which in itself is a pretty accurate assessment.

I think the "non F" was one of the points to Charlie's post, Ironside.

Tree - yeah, I hear the word about family. The store is still very much a possibility, but it's still off a ways. But yeah, no family is something I told my partner. I like the guys's wife and cousin and whatnot, but I don't want an altercation between them and I be a breaking point for the store and our friendship. And I'm not even going to consider anyone in my family...forget that mess.

That is sound thinking. It's like, or maybe worse than lending money to friends and family.

I've worked several times with friends and family (that is, friends I knew from before I got the job) and that usually works okay. So: working with firneds/family = good, working for friends/family = not so good.

Yeah I got that, sorry it was just a carry-over from the forum that_shall_not_be_named that I came from that used that as a catch all. I really have no idea why I even brought it up.

There is some small truth to this, but there are important things to note. First, the "family" and "work/business" mentalities must be kept entirely separate.

Second, partly a corollary to the first, nobody can use the familial relationship to take the piss.

If either of those caveats is broken, there will be Tears Before Bedtime.

Hey, I had my own NFLGS experience yesterday. I normally don't go to this place because it's out of the way. However, I happened to be nearby yesterday and popped in. This place had a decent stash of used stuff, including TLG d20 modules. However, what caught my eye was this old boxed set called "Fantasy Paths"(this thing http://www.diffworlds.com/fantasy_paths.htm).

For some bizarre reason, NONE of the used materials had a price tag. I asked the girl operating the counter how much it costs, but she didn't know, and apparently couldn't open her mouth more than a CM. Whenever she spoke, there was a 30 second delay while my brain deciphered what she had said. She had to call "him" (the owner and apparent boyfriend) to ask how much it was. Suffice it to say, it was a long, slow process, as she informed him what the box was in not-so great detail. Eventually per "his" instructions, she told me the price was $10.00. It was pretty obvious the guy pulled that number out of his a**e. Suffice it to say, I did not buy it.

Ugh.

Man, that's crappy. The FLGS that used to be in my town had a pretty good system, and it worked for the longest time.* What he did was sell a used gaming item for half its retail, no matter what. He'd give half of that value in trade (credit) or half again in cash. So, if you brought in an $18 box set, he'd sell it for $9, and give you $4.50 in credit or $2.25 in cash. I found that a local used bookstore does that as well, which is nice.

* He stopped doing this the last two years before he sold off his store/moved away. He started looking everything up on Ebay, and if it was worth something, he'd auction it. I'm sure it made him some decent cash, but as a customer, it was kind of a d**k move.

I've got my non-F LGS stories:

There's the one where the longest standing employee is the owner's brother. The owner is at his wit's end because the this is the job the brother can seem to keep, thanks to a deathbed promise to the father. (Take care of your brother because he's to lazy to take care of himself.)

You'd think the fact that the parasite brother is a gamer would be a plus. It ain't. The guy will have his deadbeat RPG buddies fill up all the tables at the store and he'll "try to look sad" when no one else has room to game. He'll also say "we don't have that" when they do and never phone in a special order when he's behind the counter.
The guy has no apt and no car, he basically mooches couch space, Chinese take out and weed from whoever will give it to him. The only finacial commitment he makes is the $15 fee for his City of Heroes account.

Now the game store in I had to put up with in the sticks was worse and that's another post. Needless to say, the guy thought gaming store meant "my personal game club house." If you weren't into his cliche and their games, you were out of luck.

It wasn't sealed, but looked complete. I was tempted, but was 1.) in a hurry and 2.) irritated as hell.

That being said, I still might go back and try to pick it up.
