Post by miller6 »

Here's the link for killer GNOLL cave, the 5th in the killer cave series.
I'll be adding andrea and laura's pics as they finish them up.

As before, right click then "save as" to your local drive, then open it up from there.

Here's the print-friendly pdf...

As long as someone finds use for it, it's well worth the effort.

Are you right clicking and downloading or opening it in a new window? It's too big to open in the browser and may freeze the window. I'll fix that in the compilation.

What browser are you using (i.e. AOL browsers block cable-based sites like mine)? If so and it's being blocked, you'll have to check the browser options/preferences to allow the site. Or are you trying to download from a work computer? If so, the system admin might have restrictions on the company LAN that prevent the download.

Well, to resolve the problem for now, if anyone else wants to post my mods on their site, post the URL as a link in this topic.

I think it's worth the wait...a few minutes for 4 hours or more of gaming goodness.

Like I said...I'll fix that issue in the compilation. Don't you have some writing to do or something?
Actually, thanks for timing it...good to know for other downloaders.

Is my memory just bad or have you learned to make your lay outs look a lot better?

Evidently my firewall here is not at all happy with the downloading method you suggest.. I have never been successful with downloading any of your Killer modules.. (and I am using Firefox).

I want to try these.. can I entice you to send copies of all the current mods to me? Or maybe have some site host them for download?

I do believe he already has done so at this site.

By the way Brian, I would like to say that your "killer series" are all great pieces of work!

Well, "better" is often in the eye of the beholder, but yes, I've been gradually changing the format to conform with TLG standards. You'll see this again with Killer Bugbear Cave. The changes mainly involve more use of size 8 font and changes in stat format and use of bold or italics text. Please let me know which format you find the easiest to follow as a CK.

Still looking for volunteers to host them on non-cable-based sites. I'll keep ya updated. (Will get 'em to ya one way or another).

BTW, I downloaded this last one with Firefox. I have had to use Firefox to reliably visit and post to this board for about a week now. I would guess it is your firewall or other "blocker" software, unless the fact I am on DSL makes cable sites friendlier to me.

How big of an attachment can your email server handle?

If it can take it, PM your email address to me or add it to your profile. Is the one at bluesquash a work email or personal?

Suggestion when running this. Look at the PC's AC and make sure the gnolls can hit 25% of the time. For example, if the parties fighters AC's are 20 make sure to give the gnolls a +5 to hit since it is 25% of 20. Also the chiefteness should hit 50% of the time, so she would hit just fine with 7hd and her spear.

Now if you have the party fight them enmasse you can mysteriously drop the to hit of most or all of them. Personally I upped their HD to 4 with average HP's of 20 and gave them a +1 to hit and damage due to STR.

The party I ran through it numbered 7, 4 Knights levels 5, 5, 3, and 3; a 5th level Bard, a 5th level Paladin, and a 5th level Cleric. They kicked butt.

The snake and the "weeds" were pretty challenging but I recommend upping the kitty cat to 9HD and give it +2 to hit and damage. Only if the party will have the option to rest and heal before facing the Gnolls, though.

Give the Shaman Fireball instead of Haste and Prayer instead of Glyph.

I did this for a party of 7 with good AC's, only the Bard had an AC below 20 and the Paladin had 22 due to armor, dex, and divine aura (+2)

If you have a party of 4 I doubt you'll need to increase much, if anything, but having 7 sure made a difference.

All good suggestions, Treebore. A group of 7 is a big group and worse when they have high ACs. Kudos for exercising your adaptibility as a CK.

In general, you got it right, the encounters on the way up to the lair ARE more difficult than the gnolls themselves. Much of the difficulty of the gnolls hinges on whether or not they fall victim to the shaman's smoke early in the adventure. I mentioned in the mod that the gnolls don't want to swarm the party because it made them vulnerable to area of effect spells. However, if a swarm should occur (i.e. once the chieftain blows her whistle), here's a couple other suggestions to increase the difficulty...

1. When more than one foe faces a single character, give each foe +1 to hit for each additional foe beyond the first.

2. "Monkey pile" to immobilize an intruder.

3. Roll to hit ac 10 (plus dex and magical bonuses) to grab an opponent's weapon, shield, helmet, etc., then make a strength roll to pry it away from them (with difficulty equal to the character's strength score).

4. Run off with characters items to draw stragglers away from the main group of characters.

5. Have a couple gnolls combine their strength to toss a party member out of the cave.

As you may guess, players dread taking on large groups when I'm the CK.

One question, treebore...Did your players have a good time/find the module interesting? I strive to make each mod a fun experience with unique settings and memorable encounters.

Okay, I restored my settings and it should work again.

(Been having issues with my webserver ever since I installed zone alarm, even though it's shut down. Have to check into it more. Could be damage from spyware too.)

Should there be any more problems, angelius has been kind enough to host that one on his site too.
