C&C Sci-Fi with Classes (not Starsiege)

Post by Malakor »

A disclaimer, I have Starsiege, and I rather like it, that's not what has prompted this post (I'm an inveterate tinkerer is more like what prompted this post )

Has anyone tinkered around with doing a SF port of the standard C&C rules?

Something along the lines of how Spacemaster (especially the first edition, not so much Privateers) or the TSR Buck Rogers in the 25th Century was done?

I ask, because I'm seriously considering digging out my copies of both of those from the library (what was the kids bedroom before they finally moved out) and giving it a shot, and I wondered if anyone has gotten a start on this type of thing, and what you might have encountered in doing so.

Anywho, just the mental meanderings of an old man with Way too much time on his hands

I've been tinkering with a C&C Fantasy/Sci-fi melding, fantasy world with sci-fi elements. Its a typical fantasy world that an intergalactic empire took interest in.

It makes use of vehicles, a degree of futuristic weapons, some cybernetics, ability enhancing symbionts etc.

Its using the standard C&C classes though and I haven't typed any of it up. Its all in a hand written notebook I've been keeping on the setting.

I recently picked up Dragonstar for $4 and I like it.

not sure that answers your question, but it may be a good source book if you can find it

Relaxo,

I'm glad you brought that one up, a buddy of mine ran a short campaign of Dragonstar back when it was first released. I'll have to see if my copy of the game is still floating around the back room.

I dug out my copy of Future Law, and I think my Buck Rogers is in my office at work. Monday's are usually not too crazy around my office until mid-afternoon (and I get in around 0600 which means I have 2 hours of peace and quiet before anyone else arrives and starts to bother me, so Monday mornings are Me time ), so I'll prolly have a look over these at breakfast and then at the office in the morning.

Wouldn't really be hard to adjust the classes, just extend their abilities into the sci fi realm to whatever tech level desired.

As to vehicles, equipment, ect. No reason why one couldn't logically extend magical effects into the sci fi realm.

I use "Blood & Space: d20 Starship Adventure Toolkit. It is rather easy to convert the classes and simple ship combat to C&C. And, everything but the fiction that begins each chapter is completely OGL.

Exactly.

Thats what I've been doing with the high tech equipment. Most effects are accompl9oshable with spells already existing in C&C, just use the mechanics part of them.

I did a Planetary Romance one shot as my first go with CnC. Had a blast.

Used Action Points along with toys from Slave Lords of Cydonia (Bad Axe Games) and the MARS pdf (Adamant Games). Nothing says cool pulp scifi like rayguns that run on crystals.

Even though I had races from Iron Lords of Jupiter ready to run, my player opted to be traditional fantasy archetypes. Made the culture clash even better.

I haven't actually used C&C for a space campaign, but years ago I did a SciFi campaign which was kind of a Dune-Star Wars blend and I used old brown-book OD&D to do it. The class system works out just fine, but you need to be more selective as to which classes are allowed so that you don't get SciFi Wizards (for example). When I simulated the Jedi Knight I just created my own jedi-like spell list.

Again, haven't tried it with C&C but I can't imagine that it would be that hard to do.

I love the adamant Mars sourcebook. Its great. I love the Savage Worlds rule system for which it was originally written, too. Was it a problem to convert the whole thing to c&c?

I didn't really convert, per say. I just toned down some weapon damage and used the gear.

It was one of the few times I used stuff as is in a crazy mishmash without serious thought on game balance. Worked like a dream.
