Is the artwork included in various Castle Zagyg products remain with TLG? I think there is some worthy artwork in there that can be transfered over to other, upcoming TLG products. Some of the artwork has not been seen in any other TLG product.
What about the maps contained within CZ?
I'm assuming the Darlene map from Yggsburgh with all of the names on it can no longer be used.
Thank for the info to anybody in the know.

Re: Yggs, EM Folio, CZ1 - artwork question
The art work belongs to the artists, and we're already putting some in other products.
The maps that I drew belong to me. But they wont be seen again.
The Darlene map I'm not so sure of. It belongs to either Darlene or Trigee.

Thank you for the info. I was hoping that the artwork at the very least would make it into other products. It's a shame about the maps though, but understandible.

Nowadays most artists are smart enough to ask to own their copyright. That wasn't the case in many of the early days where TSR owned artwork outright. Fantasy art can easily be recycled unless you're dealing with very specific identifiable characters.
The way the maps work is different because the individual map is a specific creation, but the underlying intellectual property is based on Gary's sketches.
I think with maps its a case of joint copyright. I don't think Peter or Darlene could ever publish the maps elsewhere, but neither could Trigee use their maps since it's what I believe a joint copyright.
I believe Peter or Darlene could eventually sell the originals like you can sell original comic book art, but that would depend on the copyright laws and contracts signed.

Good to hear that the art can get resused. I have a question for Peter - what about art that had been submitted but not used? I'm assuming that those pieces are reverting back to the original artists as well. Is that correct?

All art belongs to the artists. If it was submitted, and not used, its still the artists work.
Only thing TLG pays for, art wise, is the use to print in their books. Beyond that, the artists are free to use the art elsewhere on bookmarks, tshirts, post cards whatever. The only thing TLG asks, if the art is used, is that the artist not send it to another game company for 3 years.
As far as art goes, the only work that got used on CZ was mine and Jason Walton's.

I'm really glad to hear that. I'm glad the art isn't stuck in some kind of limbo somewhere because of the snafu that is the CZ line.
