Avoiding CKG Errata before it happens...

Post by moriarty777 »

Last night I was having a pleasant conversation in Society chat when I was also checking out some of the pics from the recent Troll Con. For those who haven't seen those pics, there are a few snapshots of pages from the upcoming CKG. When I was checking out 'Chapter 2: Classes', I noticed an error in one of the fighter abilities that conflict with the revised Combat Dominance ability as presented in the 4th print PHB and the 'Ir-rada' file.

The fourth level Combat Dominance ability was recently changed to encompass all 1 HD opponents. However the CKG extract states that at 14th level, this ability 'now' extends to all 1 HD creatures. Basically, as it is written right now, the CKG's Combat Dominance does not take into account the recent revision to that ability in the new PHB.

Just a heads up so that this can be slightly re-written and corrected before this tome sees print.

Already way ahead of ya. I've already got that on a list to point out to Steve next week.
It should be noted that what was seen at Troll Kon is an unedited document.

Glad to hear these things are being addressed!

I figured it wasn't a final version but just wanted to be sure just the same!

Well, we have to leave some in there. Otherwise everyone wouldn't have anything to talk about.

Management (me) actually has contracts with our Union (headed up by me) that require we have at least 3 mistakes per page per book on the first printing.

What you are looking at is raw, raw raw text. So no worries on that. We are going to work very hard to make sure that there is as little problems with the ms as possible.

Thanks!

It should become mandatory that every Troll Lord Games product contains a final page that is simply expurgated text drawn directly from the original, but randomly. For example, I might have text drawn from pages 6, 9, 15, 24, 100, and 108 -- not done to make sense, but just to cause confusion, especially when someone considers it "official." With software, this should be relatively easy to accomplish and makes every single print of the book (within the run and universally) unique. It would also be fun.

I'm a teacher and I tell my students that they can tell how old a handout might be based on the number of typos. If it has a couple of typos, it's fairly new. No typos means it's a few years old.

TLG may be following my lead on this issue....

Labor (Being partly me) will be curing the raw text into more digestable gibbets as soon as the Union and the Management get done ironing out the various contract negotiations.

Has TLG ever considered releasing products as PDFs a few months before going to press? That way, some mistakes can be caught (and PDFs subsequently updated) before the physical copies are printed.

Not sure about the idea to release as a pdf "before" release. I see where you're coming from, but that might affect sales of the actual print product. On the topic of when to release pdf versions of books...I would like to see TLG release pdf versions of the print books 2 weeks to a month after the release of hard or softcovers.

Yeah, but the potential sales damage from the retailer end isn't something I am willing to risk. We are going to try a new process with the CKG, launched here very soon actually. We'll hope and see if it works.

I'll spend most of the day thinking about this new process. Well, maybe not the entire day.
