Newbie trying to grasp the C&C campaign setting

Post by Eryndur »

Hi everyone. After long years of deluding myself with 3.x, I've finally done the right thing and picked up C&C.

Love. It.

I've been perusing the forums, and I'm still a bit confused as to the primary campaign setting. Can someone please answer the following questions?

1) Am I right in assuming that Erde is the default setting of the A series modules?

2) If so, are there other C&C modules set in Erde that are currently available, and could you please list them in order of level progression?

3)Are there any C&C modules that are completely generic, ready to slide into any setting?

4)Gygax's Castle Zagyg: incorporated into Erde, or its own setting?

5)I bought Assault on Blacktooth Ridge, and having read the threads concerning it, it seems to be in a VERY forgotten corner of Erde. Do you recommend it as an introduction to Erde for a new C&C group, or is there another beginner module that centers around the more "happening" areas?

Lastly, I just wanted to note that I have never seen an RPG forum with this level of participation by the designers and higher-ups. It gives me hope.

Thanks!

Welcome to C&C and the Troll Lord message boards. I lurk around here daily, but only occasionally post something. That said, I'll try to answer you questions to the best of my ability.

1) Yes, the A series is set in Aihrde (new spelling for Erde). Although I haven't had a chance to run A1 & A2 yet, I'm anxiously awaiting A3 as I'm enjoying the storyline. Aihrde has a VERY rich, yet accessible history. This is my setting from now on.

2) Mortality of Green (one of my all time favorite modules) is also set on Aihrde. A C&C PDF is currently available and the revised print version should be available soon. There are also two free C&C adventures (if you haven't found them yet): A Lion In The Ropes (which was converted from D20 to C&C) and The Rising Knight (which was originally included in the C&C Box Set).

3) The other C&C modules are meant to be inserted into anyone's campaign setting.

4) I believe the answer is yes... located further east off of the known map. I don't own the material yet, so I'll let someone else step in with a definite answer.

5) The nice things about forgotten corners, you can really make them your own. The Blacktooth Ridge is (in my opinion) a perfect spot to make your own. When I get my new group together, I'm running The Rising Knight to kick things off and then the A series.

The new Aihrde material is coming soon. I believe a gazetteer styled book will be first... followed by a possible box set. If you can't wait that long, I highly recommend you pick up the Codex of Erde and maybe some of the old D20 modules and adventure/setting material like Heart of Glass or Winter Runes. As I mentioned already, I LOVE this setting and do not plan on ever looking for another one.

I have to second Outsider73's glowing recommendation for the setting of Erde (Aihrde). It is rich, detailed, and beautiful. If you are unsure about the Codex of Erde, there is also the older 'After Winter Dark' campaign setting -- it is a gazetteer that gives you a basic overview of the Erde setting.

That being said, if you chose not to use the setting, the A-Series could just as easily be transplated to another setting. If you are coming from running a 3.x setting, you might have been using already. Adopting a new system doesn't meen your past efforts need to go down the drain.

Of course, this is an opportunity for a truly fresh start!

From the indications that have been given, the newer gazettee planed will not replaced the Codex of Erde but compliment it as well as compliment the new box set. There was recently a promotional sale on most of the d20 Erde items. Definite good value to there if you're interested.

Just to add a little to what the others have said, you can check out all the d20 Erde stuff here. And if you look hard enough, you can find the AWD booklet and map for around $10. The AWD booklet makes a great player reference, whereas, the Codex is for the CK only (as it has a lot of history and knowledge that would be unknown to the common folk).

Welcome Eryndur.

This corner/aree of Aihrde is not so much forgotten as it is - wild, dangerous and untamed due the closeness of Aufstrag and the fact that's it's on the frontier of the empire.

The Empress of Outremere is struggling to maintain what's left of her empire and is supported by the 5 duchies of the realm.

Crusaders are pouring into the area, seeking fortune, adventure and wealth.

And as you know, the Blacktooth Ridge area is teaming with excitement and activity. Evil seems to be returning to this area. The 2 barons are each trying to increase their control of their cities and surrounding areas.

And so I definitely recommend it to begin your campaign. The Rising Knight (A0)is a prelude to AoBtR and is free and contains a little more info on the area and how this area relates to the Horned God, Unklar and his growing influence there. It's very much a "happening" area!

Fantastic! Thanks for all your replies. I think I'll pick up the Codex, if they still have copies left.

Looking forward to some excellent gaming!

I disagree that the Codex is for CK's only. I WISH my players would read the history of Airhde. Ginormous info-dumps in the middle of a game bore the hell out of everyone - including the CK.

Instead of the whole book, how about a summary/teaser handout. Copy the following pages and give it too them to read before starting your next session:
Unklar the Horned God's last battle:

Page 47 - last paragraph to page 48 - first paragraph.
Outremere:

Pages 122-123
Southwest Erde:

Pages 165-166

And then if anyone shows some interest, you can dump more stuff that you want them to know. Or give them the book!

Hmm...that's not a bad idea. I can have fun with this! See Rhu, this is why you are, in fact, THE MAN.

That's what I use AWD for. It has a smaller section of history than the Codex, so players can get a feel for the world without haveing all that extra info.

LOL.

Yep, a man of Unklar - waiting for his return, so as a CK, I can unleash terrible evil and destruction on my PCs. Ungern, evil priests and Morgl and who knows what else will come from Aufstrag!

I use my own setting. I do like the A-Series so far.

I echo what the others have said, I really like the feel of Erde (I prefer that spelling ). The "A" series is off to a great start and I can't wait for the next few installments.
