Where can I buy C&C rule books in Montreal?

Post by AslanC »

Valet du Coeur is always out of stock and I don't know if Librarie Dunjon is still around.

I sure won't give my money to Captiane Quebec.

I live in Lasalle but have access to a car.

Help?

You could try Gamers World (www.gamersworld.ca) The last time I was there they didnt have the core books in stock but thay have before, try calling them or shooting off an e-mail before hand.

Yes... Gamer's World has carried them before but I know for a fact that they are also out. They had a sale a few months back to clear out the older stock that they carried (consisting of some mods and a PHB) but the last time I talked to the owner, he was certainly open to bringing the newer printings of the books back in. However that means sometime in September.

I have heard about Librarie Dunjon but I haven't been but from what I gather, it's still around. Capitiane Quebec wouldn't have them anyway. I've been to them once back in April and it looked like they were trying to massively clear what they had in terms of gaming. Carta Magica also don't appear to have them.

Aslan -- are you looking to get a set for another player... yourself? Are you looking for a Player's Guide or both the PHB and M&T?

Why not just order directly from the trolls themselves?

One word: Shipping

The advantage of ordering direct? You can be sure that you'll get the latest printings of the books. This is probably better since there is updated material in the recent PHB -- notably the revised Barbarian. A couple tweaks has been done to the Monk which is nice and some people like the additional new spells for the illusionist.

The M&T adds a couple of additional monsters to the roster.

Another option, if they still have them available, are the softcovers which can only be gotten through the Trolls. They are naturally less sturdy than hardcovers but they will also be a bit less expensive.

All that said, whether you go through the local stores or TLG, you will have to wait either way. The new printing of the PHB is not in distributions chains yet and the guys at TLG are busy with Gen Con this weekend.

I was thinking of making a large order myself with TLG after GenCon since there are other things they are releasing around the same time that I'm interested in. Frankly it's actually faster ordering direct too as I've noticed it can take 6-8 weeks before some of these things are available through distribution at times.

The shipping is always the issue. For saving $5 on price I pay $11 to $20 USD for shipping from various sources.

Order direct from serleran. I swear I gotta start smuggling stuff across Peace Bridge to save on the shipping rates. Just need an address in Ontario so it looks kosher. Hmmm....

Hehehe... Robert (aka 'Serleran') sells a lot of gaming material he comes across. I should know... I'm one of his best customers!
However, he isn't a store... just someone who writes for TLG in NY State.

As an aside, I should point out that I have found shipping to certain places in the States to be on par with shipping the same thing to the West Coast in Canada. Sometimes a dollar or two cheaper to a US destination!? How messed up is that?

OK... I have an idea! Lets set up a MONTREAL C&C CHAPTER. We can offer C&C swag to our fellow cannucks. I'll just have to make regular road trips down to Troll Headquarters to get stock.

We can get it shipped to an address in just outside Platsburg, I can find out what the place is, and then someone has to go pick it up and "sneak" it across the border
Yay! Smuggling!
I kid (of course ) as I have friends who work for Customs Canada and I would NEVER dream of not playing the legal and proper border duties.

Now what is available as a full colour soft cover and how do I get them?

The three books done up as softcovers were the PHB, the M&T, and the Gods & Monsters book. I wanted to at least have both the PHB and M&T in softcover as a 'set' since these are really the core books to the game. and the hardback was only going to be available after sometime after GenCon. I've had the new books for a few weeks now.

Since I also edit the new C&C line put out by Brave Halfling Publishing, having the most recent printings is a useful thing. It's also what led me to discover the missing shark starts in the latest hardback printing of the M&T.

If we are seriously interested in a larger order... we should think about it in the next week or two and either do it through Gamer's World (which may avoid us the cost of shipping) or get organized and order the stuff ourselves and split the shipping costs. It's a thought anyway.

I am serious but since I read that the soft covers will be available sometime, I would rather wait. No sense spending money twice.

So another thought, how many of us Montrealers are there?

I like this idea of starting our Chapter of the C&C Society.

Sound off!

Pat and I have long talked about doing something in Montreal. I had at one point a 4 year old web site with over 100 members in the Montreal area ( www.rpgmontreal.com ). It's no longer there - I gave it up due to personal life changes, but wish I hadn't. It wasn't dedicated to C&C only but to all RPGs. It hosted discussion forums, optionally there was a download / upload area for DMs. I had many ideas but little time.

I tried several times to arrange for get togethers but the problem was people don't want anything unless it is free. I once tried to hold a 12$ game day with a sandwich and drink included, at a local hotel conference room, but no one wanted to pay 12$. I held annual BBQs at my place, the first 2 years were only attended by my own group of friends, the 3rd year was open to everyone and I had quite a turn out. I however couldn't afford to have everyone every year for free. The 4th and final year I had a much smaller personal group. Then I gave it up. It's interesting to note that during that 3 year BBQ the 2nd edition gang sat seperate from the 3rd gang. There were clear lines of division. Also they tend to hang out only with people they know personally. I surmised at that point that 90% of gamers are anti-social so why bother trying to break them?

During it's existence, I met well over 70 gamers, half of them at local shops or coffee places and such. I hosted at least 30 directly at home in my awesome game room (... reminiscing ... I miss my game room...) and that was fun too! I've met all sort of people from the strange to the REALLY STRANGE! LOL! Nonetheless it was a grand time for me. I wish to do it again, but this time on a more grand scale.

One of our ideas (Pat and mysef) was to rent a game room where we could hang out and have memberships from various people. Basically a real ' gaming club '. It's possible but LOCATION LOCATION LOCATION! Where would we go? I've heard talk about local public areas, but that's just not the same thing. Gaming in a store is OK but also not ideal. It would also require money and people to trust with keys and such.

I guess the best thing is to start up a virtual MTL C&C CLUB first, then take it from there. I have no problem firing up my web site again. It would require about 60$ a year for domain and proper services, and then the cost of actually running my server.

If we go with a C&C chapter, then we could even go as far as being some sort of distributor - I guess?!?!?

I'm up for anything. We should all meet and have an actual face to face talk.

PM me for more contact info and I can arrange for this to get started.

Wow that is ambitious.

I find the Montreal scene divides English/French, but there are crossovers. Surprisingly Vampire LARPS did that
I would be up for a get-together. Just to sit down and talk and such.

As for BBQs, the easiest way to keep costs down if pot-luck it. Everyone brings their own and that's that.

I am also thinking of starting a second group for a biweekly game (probably on Sundays) but I am not 100% sure of that yet.

Either way, let's see what Pat says and take it from there.

Ahh yes... the language barrier!

It's true that the language barrier plays a key role in forming a group here in Montreal. For the most part, all game stores are owned and run by Francophones. Being an Anglophone with mediocre french speaking capabilities, I know how intimidating it can be to go into a game store in Montreal, let alone try to game with the locals that attend. I've been shunned on a few occasions by the LEVALET employees who I found, IMHO, rude and disrespectful to English speaking customers. I had an Aussie gamer friend live here in Montreal for 4 months, and even he commented how they seemed rude.

I have nothing against French, but you get kinda tainted when you grew up being teased by all the french kids in the neighborhood for being from an 'immigrant family'. It didn't matter that I was born here. I've been told on at least 2 occasions as an adult to go back to my country.

That's why I love Gamers World. It's located in a predominately English neighborhood and the owner and most of it's customers are English. That's where I ran C&C games for a year and loved it. I just can't do that anymore on Saturdays (that's when they hold their RPG game) and it's difficult to compete against D&D 4e. I've suggested a Sunday evening C&C get together but never got any confirmation. Seeing as how it's a store in the business of doing business, I don't blame them for not really jumping on the idea of a C&C game day - not too many takers so better off using the room for money making games.

Anyhow, I'm going to probably see Pat tonight, so I'll see if he's up to having a meet and greet some day soon.

If you guys do end up organizing a "chapter" under the auspices of the Society and are running game days, be sure and talk to me - we'll see if we can arrange some Primers (quickstart rules) and some promotional materials for the Crusade for you...

Pat talks to me pretty regularly in chat so not hard to track me down.

See it's funny. I am bilingual (English first) but grew up in the Gasp so my French isn't what they consider French in Montreal. That said I have never once had trouble being served properly in English at Le Valet.

GameWorld on the other hand I have only been in once and was treated very rudely by the guy behind the counter. I never went back as I always vote with my dollars.

I am sure it is a great place, just first impressions and all that.

REALLY!

Well... I've got to tell you that I still love LEVALET for it's variety and sheer stock, but I always go in there with a bit of caution. My french really sucks... so I speak to them in English and they may or may not speak to me in English (depends on who it is I speak to). Without pointing out specific individuals, I know now who to avoid and who to NEVER speak to in English.

Who was behind the counter at Gamersworld? I haven't been there in a LONG time so things could have changed. I know that they get a regular flow of kids wanting to use their computers, so it can get pretty hectic in there. Depending on when you went and what was going on, I can see at least one person who works there getting a little 'testy'. LOL!

It was just when 4e was announced and I was starting a D&D game so I asked the guy behind the counter if I were to buy the Phb, Dmg and MM could he cut me a deal, say no tax or 10% off or something and in return I would give him my business (I lived at the time like 5 blocks away).

He handed me a card that was for every $200 of purchase I would get %20 of my next purchase.

Nice, but not what I was asking.

Now you have to understand I was taught to haggle by my Jewish and Arabic friends and grew up in a retail business family. I assumed we had started negotiations.

It went down hill from there. I left without purchasing anything.

It was something I have noticed in gaming stores (heck lots of stores) from one end of this country to the other.

Some have business men running them who want to sell you stuff and will make deals to encourage sales and repeat business.

Most are run by guys who are just gamers who decided to run a store and have that lovely personality disorder that comes with far too many people in our hobby.

Now there could have been a myriad of reasons he was the way he was; having a bad day, not feeling well, his dog just ran away, etc...

At the end of the road I was willing to drop $150 right there in his store on various product if he had given me a deal, he wouldn't so I went to Le Valet and spent my money there.

Hell I have even gotten deals at Capitane Quebec from time to time. I was just blown away by this guys seeming unwillingness to do business with me.

Of course this is all from my perspective
