Tell me about the 'new' barbarian

Post by vivsavage »

I won't be getting the new PHB until the hardcover is released this month. Just wondering what the new barbarian is like. Do they have any survival/wilderness skills?

Yes. The ability named Deerstalker is like a "lite" version of a lot of Ranger abilities rolled into one.

I'll try to provide more details later, but I think it's one of the best write-ups for the barbarian class ever. TLG really got captured what it means to be a "barbarian" and what sets it apart from other classes.

*tips hat to new barbarian*

Yes, the new barbarian is a powerful class that has a lot of abilities within the C&C game. When you get your new HB PHB, you will not be dissappointed.

Is the barbarian more of a Conan-type or a historical celtic/saxon warrior type?

It is not tied to a specific culture, per se, though I felt it was more Native American than universal barbarian -- certainly not Conan, as only Conan is Conan.

Abilities:

Combat Sense

Deerstalker

Intimidate

Primeval Instincts

Whirlwind Attack

Primeval Will

Ancestral Calling

and I agree this is the best write up ever, because this is the first time, since first appearing in Dragon mag and UA, that I felt a desire to play one.

I agree. Looks pretty interesting. Look forward to getting my PHB and being able to read up on it in full.

Yeah, it's SWEET! I think Ancestral Calling IMO may be overpowered, but then again, they get it at 10th level when characters are supposed to be powerful.

One thing I noticed was you have to somewhat rethink hit points with some of the new powers, but I don't think I'd change anything or could have done it better.

It really looks very frickin' sweet! and great illustration too!

I got to play the new Barbarian class during the C&C tournament at GenCon this year. The ability I really thought was the bomb was Intimidate. It's both a great enemy debuff and roleplaying opportunity rolled into one! Definitely a much more well-rounded class with much to offer a party.

What I do?

It's the only class that heals like that. dare I say, it's like a 4e healing surge... it is different... different = rethinking. I didn't say bad.

for me I was like, huh? gain HP? and maybe a day later, I read it again and now I like it, but I dunno.

Not saying it's bad or anything, but you have to admit it's a new mechanic for the game.

Very true! And true to the spirit of Barbarians, IMO. I love the line in the write up (fluff) that says something like, "To barbarians, to be 'civilized' is to be weak."

If you want a real Conan the Barbarian type barbarian, check out James Mishsler's stuff. THe new C&C provides a great barbarian class that really fits the meaning of "barbarian."
