Did Google Die?

Post by serleran »

OK, so I was doing a little browsing around before work, and then all of a sudden the searches stopped loading, and my internet connection was lost. It happens, I guess, but should not...especially at the ridiculous amount being paid for it. Anyway, like a good mantra monkey, I reboot the router as I know they're going to tell me to... and I get some of the internet back (like here) but many other places are gone... unreachable. So, I wonder if I am alone in this debacle, or if others are able to get to places like Google, Facebook, eBay... these are all places I cannot access, in addition to the online tools for my job, which means, until this is fixed, I am reamed since I have no more vacation days to take for the year and I don't get "sick days." Naturally, tech support has put me on a holding pattern, so I'll be waiting like 6 years for them to try and help. Oh well. Guess I'll work on some ACE stuff.

I noticed a problem with Google earlier but it now seems ok.

Had I done that, it would already be fixed. No... this is an issue with the ISP.

Oftentimes, after apparent "outages," I later see news of cyberattacks sweeping the web. Either that, or the people running the ISP are making spaghetti out of the various wires and cables.

Internet Traffic Report

You can also just ping your ISP server. If you get a timeout, a 403, 404, or 500 error, their server (or server farm) has been temporarily hosed.

Generally if something major goes down like Facebook, or Google, or say for example, and entire ISP, I'll get a bunch of Twitter traffic. All the birds start singing and suddenly fly off when there is an earthquake.

There was a traffic spike that slowed down the whole network around 1240 today, not sure if that's EST or GMT though.

I've had no problems with the internet itself. My connection, however, is another story. It works fine and soem Brighthouse folks come down and next thing I know, it's cutting out every now and then.

But, but, Google's motto is "do no evil." How Vader of it.

Another issue that can occur is a router outage or other issue somewhere between you and all the popular parts of the internet. Because of how routing works, this can cause some folks to lose connection while others see no performance affect.

Put another way, it might not be your ISP or google, but a Tier 1 ISP or someone else involved in internet backbone. Probably still your ISP though.

The longer the chain of technology, the better chance something can go wrong. At least that's how I see it.

My connection has been very bad this weekend. I think we are running out of internet. And I just chucked out the last of my special magazine stash.
