Should I buy the new M&T?

Post by vivsavage »

Is there any real difference between the latest printing of M&T and the previous ones? In other words, is it worth picking up if you own the previous version.

Nothing "critical". The M&T is primarily just improved in layout. Greatly improved in everyones opinions that I have talked to. Rules wise, no reason that I am aware of.

Its definitely my M&T of preference though, much easier on the eyes, literally.

It's certainly pretty, the M&T3 that is. Plus there is errata, typographical, and layout fixes in the new printing from the 2nd. It's just a theory, but I don't see TLG making another big printing change for the M&T in the near future, so it's probably a good puchase.

Just to be clear, I think its a good buy simply because of how much better it looks. Outside of cosmetics there is no reason to buy one. I consider "errata" as being cosmetics, rather than a game destroyer so many others thinks it is.

So there is nothing new in it? No new monsters?

Yes, there are a few new monsters that were added. For the life of me I can't remember which ones, but there were 3 added.

Yellow Mold...

A couple got put in that ended up being left out of previous printings.

But beyond that, nothing new, no.

I think it would be worth it for nothing more that supporting TLG!
But yeah, the couple new monsters are cool (Yeth Hound and Yellow Mold, iirc) and the art and layout is good. I think you would be pleased.

My FLGS just came through for me. I got the M&T and I am now just waiting for the Players Handbook. I've only done a cursory glance through it, but immediately I can say, nicely laid out and beautiful choice of paper.

Is it true that the softcover Of Gods and Monsters will be released, into distribution? Or, was it just the online TLG store?

If it is being released into distribution then I have to warn my FLGS to not get it and that I'll wait for the hardcover.

Didn't Steve post in the Poll thread in the general forum just yesterday that the "Of Gods and Monsters" HC is cancelled for the foreseeable future? I'll have to go reread that.

If I recall correctly the soft bound is being released into distribution because there will be no HC.

Yes, you should always buy multiple copies of the new printings. It keeps TLG in business.

Here it is:

"

The Ugly: Gods and Guides

Of Gods & Monsters: This book is complete and print ready. Its sitting here waiting for distribution. Its only want is to be actually printed. Of course our cash flow problem is not going to allow this to happen anytime soon. November at the earliest would be my best guess. But allowing this really kick-butt product to languish when we can self produce it is not acceptable. So Gods & Monsters will be printed as a Soft Cover, perfect bound book. The price will be reduced to $24.99. Everyone who pre-ordered the book is entitled to a $10.00 rebate. We will enclose cash or a check in the order when it ships. Making OG&M a perfect bound book allows us to get it into distribution immediately, as early as next week actually. Pre-orders will begin shipping as early as Friday. I do apologize for everyone who was looking forward to a hard cover but the good news is that you will be getting OG&M much sooner than.

IF anyone wants a refund please contact TLG at orders@trolllord.com and we will refund your money immediately. "

Funny, I read that and somehow- in my brain- I read it as softcover then later hardcover.

I'm going to have to think on this. Right now I'm really not all the interested in getting softcover, and seeing as how Of Gods and Monsters is really not needed I'm probably going to pass on it.

Hopefully there will be a hardback reprint in the future. I'll get that in a heartbeat.

All is not lost though. The money I would've have spent on Of Gods & Monsters, I'll put towards getting Tainted Lands.

The Jim Ward is ruining TLG thread inspired me to get it, when I had planned not to.

Guess I haven't been around enough lately. Didn't know OG&M wasn't making the HC transition. I wouldn't minded to have seen it in HC, but it's not the end of the world.

Ok, its not going to be in HC, for now. Simply because Steve can't afford it at this time. This does not preclude it appearing in hardcover later, especially if their is enough interest in softcover sales.

Okay, this kind of makes me feel a little uncomfortable.

Let me ask this - and if I don't get an answer, then I don't get an answer.

Is TLG in dire straits? Or is the money issue just stemming around the budget for this project?

Is there a blog I'm missing?

The story has been big news 'round these parts of late. The short, short story is that TLG can't print HC in house like they wanted. HC books will be farmed out to local printers, but those costs are prohibative at the moment. Softcover books can be printed by the Trolls themselves and received great reviews from SC products over the past few months. So it looks like TLG will be doing G&M in SC for the time being.

There's a locked post or two in the main forum where Steve covered all of this over the last few days.

And no TLG is not in dire straits. The cost of printing has just gone up. And its cheaper for TLG to do perfect bound books. Especially for books that aren't essential for game play.

Well, that is certainly a catch 22. If I don't buy the soft cover version I am contributing to not have a hard cover run. If I do buy a soft cover then I'll be supporting for a hard cover run, but have to re-buy a book I already have.

Since you already have a previous print version, one thing not mentioned was an accidental omission from the hardcover version of the new M&T printing. Basically, the Shark stats are missing (the entry itself is there). When they did the softcover run, they've corrected this problem.

Bust aside from that issue, the paper, layout and appearance of the book is nicer now. The shark thing and one other detail just drives me nuts though. But what I've done is print up a copy of the shark (provided as part of the official 'irrata'), trimmed the page, and included it in the book.
