What PeelSeel2 said. Helps keep your machine from getting pwned by the bad guys.

Hmmm... They must have different series of Service Packs. Due to my computer crash I had to re DL service packs, and SP 2 was dated June of 2009, where as the only SP 3 I can find is dated for last year.

So I can only guess Microsoft rebundles the SP's every so often.

Edit: I see now, SP3 is for XP, there are only 2 SP's for VISTA.

weird.

even with automatic updates?

this thing is locked up like a nun's hoohoo with Norton internet security and Webroot spysweeper.

I also have almost no idea what I'm talking about.

I swear Microsoft does its best to make it incompatible with Norton, McCafee, etc.... with every "update".

Tree brings up a good question - are you Vista or XP? As he said, SP2 is the latest for Vista, SP3 for XP. In either case, best to get the most recent set of updates from MS, as they release additional security updates each month.

FWIW, Norton seems to be the "least bad" of the anti-virus / desktop security suites at the moment, at least as far as coverage and playing nice with other software, at least for XP.

Anyone who is using Vista should at least give some consideration to going to Windows 7. Win 7 is so superior to Vista that the performance is almost like night and day.

Any service pack is usually a good thing. I concur with Breakdaddy though, I would never look back at XP or Vista now that 7 is out. Having beta-tested it for months and now with the final version, it's like night and day.

I just went back from Vista to XP, not ready for Win 7 until they put out their first few fixes
I will never touch Vista again. I made a run of it and lasted 3 months before I wanted to gouge my eyes out.

It was pretty as hell though

There's really nothing to fix with 7, as surprising as that is. It's stable, fast, and resource light (relatively speaking) for what the OS can do. Nothing to fear from 7. I know I sound like an MS schill, but it IS that good!

The problem is they want me to pay to get something better than the piece of crap I got in the first place. They should upgrade us for free as an apology.

I can not argue with that. While I've never personally experienced any of the horror stories of Vista myself, I can attest to the fact that 7 is a definite improvement on every aspect of Vista.

Well, it isn't too horrible, I can get the "family pack" and upgrade 3 of my comps for $50 each.

If you have a good friend or family member who goes to college or works for a college or university, have them look at scoring you a copy at their school's bookstore. They can frequently benefit from "academic pricing".

If you are a student try techhead.org. You send them a fax of your student ID and you can buy a number of programs for pretty cheap. for example, Office Enterprise version for only $79. or Windows 7 Ultimate upgrade version for only $89.99. Also of interest for folks here is Adobe Acrobat Pro v.9 for $99.

I used to have a friend who worked at the Concordia University Student Book Store, she would hook me up with all kinds of deals on software... almost makes me want to register for 1 single course just for the ID

So it's that much better, eh? Cool

I have on old machine, 3 GB RAM 1.6 GHz CPU(dual core)

so... changing to WIN 7 will make it run faster?

or just go w/ more RAM and wait for next box?

Should run fine. RAM is more than enough, processor should be adequate. You can run the upgrade advisor to find out, but I'd be surprised if it didn't. It ran on my old single-core P4 3.0 GHz and 1GB of RAM.
