The Book of Familiars
Troll Lord Games launches its first Pathfinder book! The Book of Familiars.
Taleriean lay upon the steps, pinned with arrows. Balos headlong rush ended in death. Now Eurich stood alone upon the steps . . . not quite alone, for with him stood Bonecrush, his animal companion, his familiar. Emboldened he fell upon the orcs in the mad rush of glorious combat!
Familiars for All Classes!
Herein we expand the horizons of familiars and have a developed a fully functional, well balanced approach for each character a class to gain a familiar or animal companion. The Book of Familiars is a resource for expanding the role of familiars and animal companions in your campaign by providing an assortment of new rules and options. Using the new rules found herein, not only can characters of any class now summon familiars and animal companions. The Book of Familiars adds whole new dimensions to the classes. Rules are included for more than two hundred possible familiars including complete statistics for more than seventy new animals and monsters. The exact nature and powers of a particular familiar depend upon the character class of the master, and the decisions you make as the player in summoning and empowering the familiar.
The Book of Familiars offers a whole new venue for players to expand their existing games and add unheard of dimensions to any class. Within these pages carefully balanced rules allow players to acquire familiars for any character class they play. Rogues, Fighters, Clerics, and Druids all have the opportunity to acquire a familiar or animal companion. Paladins are treated in great detail with rules on heroic, intelligent weaponry, spirit familiars and more. Bards can become acquainted and companions with the Muse that gives them the gift of song and so much more. All classes are treated carefully for game balance. Rangers, Barbarians, Monks, Sorcerers and Wizards are all treated in this Book of Familiars.

Hmm... hope the work involved in dealing with Pathfinder won't take too much of the Trolls' time

No fears there. Casey Christofferson has taken over the conversion to Pathfinder, but since the book was designed for 3.5 it won't be difficult. I'll get him the files and he'll turn them over. Aside from the cover, all the art is complete. So the book is well ahead of most other projects. And as Casey has 4 books on my desk and is ready to turn over another 2, all for C&C, it won't slow him up.
I've been working hard on M&T of Aihrde these past two week and it is shaping up very nicely.
So BoF will have no impact on C&C, or neglible.
C&C is still our Flagship and will be for a long long time.

AHA! I was correct. When I saw the madhouse rush for Pathfinder at GenCon (and it's insanely long line) that this may be a good route for publishers. Then when Steve said they were looking at supporting other games, I figured PF was probably one of them. Why not? TLG did a boatload of 3x stuff, and they can repackage it and sell it as PF compatible and do very well. I am curious as to whether or not if modules are soon to follow.

As a former d20 book... it shouldn't. It'll be a matter of checking for the little differences here and there. Other former d20 books would also be fairly easy to convert over if they want to do others down the line.

Is this going to be only PF compatible or C&C compatible as well? The announcement is marginally ambiguous.

I'm hoping for a C&C dual release to be honest. *crosses fingers* but I wouldn't hedge any bets on it.

Best of luck with your Pathfinder endeavors. Chances are slim that I'll buy the PF stuff. That's only because I'm a Castles and Crusades, and Savage Worlds guy. Still yet, I think that it will bring in some new customers. Then, those customers might just visit the website, and find out about this other game called Castles and Crusades. Either way, it should bring more revenue to TLG. Good luck.

Hey folks,
To answer some questions.
1) Eventually we will do the BoF as a C&C book, but that is going to take some doing as it is presently structured around a feat system.
2) Tylermo. You hit that nail right on the head.
3) This will not impact C&C production a bit.
4) I have no 4, just thought I needed one more bulleted point.
5) I made this one to distract from the weakness of 4.

Haha. Good to hear that maybe the Familiars book might see a C&C release. Still, all the best to those Troll guys. I hope this one sells like mad!

It didn't make Christmas, but it's in editing now. Folks, please note that conversion from 3.5 to Pathfinder is not necessarily as simple as you might have been led to believe in terms of necessary text alterations (characters might be a different story)--at least that's what I'm finding. It's the odd little changes that get ya!

Since its 20,000 I suggest "Captain Nemo" as his title. Beyond the obvious connection, he is one who sails on his own terms and ignores those he doesn't agree with...confident in his journey and goals.

Thanks, Tree. I printed out the rules last night after I saw a mention of them under the Book of Familiars product entry. I need to take a look at the messageboards to see what's being said about them, though.
If you happen to see anything specific that I should make note of, post a link here.

Sounds like there is much more interest in the Summoner than the Witch, and I didn't catch any posts that would apply to the Book of Familiars content, but just to be sure here is the play test forum, in case you weren't aware of it:

Re: On the Anvil (11-06-09) TLG 1910 Book of Familiars (PF)
We are updating the website's Commerce page tonight (March 14, 2011). With luck it will go up without too much of a hitch. If it does then this book will go on pre-order tomorrow. Peter has the layout about 90% done I think, needing only a few more pieces of art to inject and the final appendix to come in and it will be off to press.
So, we anticipate shipping this month or very early in April.
