TAINTED LANDS STUFF

Post by James M. Ward »

As a designer, I would be very interested in some comments on my adventure in the TAINTED LANDS box set.

I haven't had time to take a really detailed look at it. The cursory look I've taken (I'll supplement this later) leads me to think that it would be a lot of fun to run. I love the inclusion of the "Horror Element" sections with each encounter. There are some great ideas there (the toothpaste-food coloring example jumps to mind ).

My feel of this, in spite of the clear statements of scene setting, is that it's not geared toward the novice CK/GM. While most modules have some measure of this, I find it really true here. In the hands of an experienced CK, this will be a fun evening's worth of gaming. In the wrong hands, however, it could be a tough go. The line of TPKing the party vs. getting them to cut and run is razor thin.

The one negative I did notice, that isn't a function so much of the writing, is some minor issues in editing. The first page had issues in terms of typos that should have been caught in the editing process. To say that the only problems I have encountered in my perusal thus far have been purely cosmetic, I'd say good job. It's something I'm looking forward to playing.

As a whole, I really enjoyed it. Some of the stuff that stands out: the Horror Elements, the tweaking of the usual, run-of-the-mill undead (the skeletons with tar armor who climb walls and hang from ceilings, for example), the Horror Effects "Turning Back the Hands of Time", the reoccurring death scene, and the drunken ghosts to name a few. The only thing I didn't like were the inclusion of the Medusa. I felt they didn't fit in with the overall theme of the adventure. Perhaps if they had been undead? Just a thought. An excellent job overall, I was not disapointed in the slightest bit. I am looking forward to more Tainted Lands products in the future.

I really don't have any constructive comments... I just thought it was awesome! I just re-read it after I read this thread and I can't wait to run it.

I did a review of the whole thing over at Dragonsfoot,
http://www.dragonsfoot.org/forums/viewt ... 37&t=39325

If you are interested.

I kept the scenario review fairly vague as I didn't want any spoilers.

As I said in the review I found Lollygag Inn to be a hoot, and despite (the innevitable) moans and groans I anticipate from my Players - I find it to be fairly well balanced (although it doesn't LOOK like it is from the players perspective) but it will be a little tough on a party that consists entirely of 4th level characters.

Upon saying that, if the group is clever and keeps their wits about them - I can't see it being a problem. HOWEVER, if it is run for a 'hack and slash' group - I can see it as giving them a really hard time. As those type of players generally will not retreat when confronted with something terrifying - they will find its the party that gets hacked and slashed rather than the monsters.
