Arcane Legions game- any good?

Post by BLOOD AXE »

It looks like BattleLore. Its well priced. $35 starter box, $12/$15 boosters/expansions.

3 factions- Romans, Egyptians, The Han (oriental)

Anyone play or know about it??

I got to play a demo game or two of this. It's pretty simplistic in play and easy to learn quickly. The game also plays quickly with battles being resolved in an hour or two depending on the size of each army. The pieces are cool though most in the booster sets come unpainted if I remember correctly.

The biggest flaw in the game is the "push" rule allowing you to sacrifice a piece in the unit to enable it to move twice or such. This makes maneuver somewhat less important and pretty well eliminates archers for more than one turn of fire since they can't melee in most cases.

Some pieces have special powers/abilities that come into play depending on how you organize your unit, which you can do turn to turn.

Each side gets X amount of action points which get spent in giving "orders" to each unit for movement, re-organization, and attack. Once those points are spent the side is done...and these points do not carry over.

Bottom line, this is a really good introduction game for teenagers and pre-teens to miniatures wargaming. Older and/or more experienced players will likely find it simplistic. For the price point, you do get a large number of miniatures (a representation for all three armies in production).

There is also online support in the form of a club and a program that allows you to create your own "official" and registered unit cards...each card being assigned a serial number to allow it to be confirmed by other players. This service comes at an additional monthly charge of course.

Im gonna pick it up. Romans for me, I'll trade away the other factions for more. I figure i can paint them myself. Ive painted hundreds of Warhamster figs.

The demo videos are a bit funny. They guy reminds me more of an accountant than a Roman general. But i think i learned the rules just by watching them quickly.

Its cheap, $35 for a starter box with 3 small armies, one of each faction. Trade the other fcations & you have a large army. BattleLore is what? $65??

This. Well, from what I recall. Last time I played it was last summer. Breakdaddy has a running tally of about 10 wins to my 4 wins I think. (I'm actually just making up those numbers. Suffice to say, he wins most of the time.)

I found ChaosOrc.com has Arcane Legions for a good discount, I think 20-25% off.
