You're very welcome. See everyone, I'm not all bad.
BTW, Castles and Crusades is making a grand beachhead on the OTC campus Tuesday of next week. We're playing from 9:50am to about 11:15am Tuesdays and Thursdays in Information Commons. Anyone that may be at OTC then is welcome to stop on by.

The idea is that people will be curious and want in. Hopefully growing C&C as a game that can be played in the downtime between classes and in longer session.

Nice catch, Julian!

Without revealing the site, was it a place with a lot of traffic, or just something you had to stumble across? Just curious as to what the damage might have been prior to nabbing them.

The PH had over 400 downloads. That's not good. The MT wasn't far behind. The folks running the site yanked it within hours of me sending them an email.

Steve

I'm in no way an advocate of this kind of thing - I'm strictly a "If it's not free, pay for it, end of story" guy.

But it occurs to me that a) someone felt TLG products were worth the effort to put up for downloading, and b) a not-insubstantial number of people (by RPG sales standards) did so. Which makes me think that perhaps C&C is making some inroads with the gaming public that it hadn't heretofore. This might be an indicator of a growing appetite for C&C particular, and maybe even TLG products in general.

Let's hope at least some of those downloaders like what they see enough to do the right thing and buy the books.

I stumbled on it as part of an assignment in one of my classes. When I saw it I felt that TLG needed to know.

Wow, that's a bit of a kick in da nuts! Could've have used that extra jack! I'd make the weenies that put it up on their website pay for it.
Great job, Julian!!

Why can't my classes involve surfing the web looking at RPG games to down load & protecting my favorite RPG company...

Nice catch!

Good luck on the upcoming game.

Not that I'm advocating any of this but there is a chance that some of those people could have bought the PHB before or maybe even AFTER such a download.

As a consumer, I would personally love an opportunity to get both for my dollar and I know in some countries it would be legal to make copies of the PHB that I own for my own personal use. I only mention this since I wish there was an option like this for people who chose to order directly from TLG.

It doesn't make any of what happened right in this case... but there's always hoping it helped bolster a few sales of the physical product.

I'm mean, it certainly helped 4th Edition initially when WOTC leaked... er... I mean... when some thief who had complete access to the proofs leaked the core books prior to the release.

I'm curious... does anyone know which printings were used?

I didn't look real close but they were pre-4th crusade by the covers. Personally I would like to get a free PDF with my hard book or even a PDF for a couple bucks more with a book. But, by gum, I wouldn't abuse the privilege by making it available to the whole world.

Oh I heartily agree there!

I can accept that they choose not to do this... most companies don't but that's starting to change. The magazine though -- well it would be a sweet deal if they offered a subscription package that was both the physical copy and the PDF copy of the mag. Kobold Quarterly does that I think... or at least did that when they started. I'm not sure how that's working out for them but it would be an option that I would invest in.

One other note. I normally don't go ratting out pirates or blowing whistles on these things. I know it happens, and have my own views on it. But struggle with questions like, "If it is not for sale anywhere is it really Piracy?" Legally I know it is but ethically and morally I wonder.

However, distributing scans of material you can get from a company is not right. Since I like Steve, the company and the game I wanted to give them a heads up.

Wow, hurray pirates.
Here's hoping the "free" copies will help bring new Crusades to the fold...them that are actually willing to pay for things they get.

And, of course, a big well done to Julian!
