good question!

hmmm.... no particular order...

Mind flayer

Drider

Beholder

Troll

Lich

goblinoids in general, if forced to pick one, Kobold

I put some thought into that and am surprised its so "classic"

Edit, Lich knocks goblinoids off the list.

Slaadi

Liches

Death Knights

Skeletal Warriors

Vampires

Seems like I have a predisposition towards undead...

Oh right, I should clarify. My gold dragon choice is based upon the pic in the 1st ed. Monster Manual, and not the one that looks like a catfish in 3E.

I didn't see the OP say it had to be from C&C.

Been thinking about this for a little while now, and it's hard to nail down just five. I luvs me some good moonsters! I'll leave out typical monstrous humanoids (orcs, goblins, etc.) as sometimes I don't consider them "monsters."

Gray Philosopher

Blackball (Umbral Blot)

Rorphyr (Darkhood)

Giant Frogs!!!

Tsathar

1. Succubus (!)

2. Flumph

3. Thought Eater

4. Intellect Devourer

5. Rakshasa

Probably all of the above because of the memorable line drawings in AD&D 1e MM.

Though Classic D&D rust monster and carrion crawler hold a special place in my heart. Oh, and the 1e Hobgoblin; I remember always wanting to make them into some awesome samurai culture.
