Friday, I went down to the local GameStop to put in my preorder for Dragon Age: Awakening and God of War III: Ultimate Edition. While there, I decided to take a risk and picked up the White Knight Chronicles.
Well, with today being rainy as hell and nothing else going on I decided to sit down and give the game a whirl.
First, it's a JRPG. I'm generally not a fan of JRPG's. I am making an exception for this game though, because despite it's kinda goofiness, I just keep playing. Visually, it's pretty in its Japanimation sort of way. Story-wise, it'[s mediocre so far, but it's engaging enough I'm still going along with it. Gmaeplay, it's a little different than I am accustomed to, but I'm still trying to figure out it's nuances and how bst to use the ability to build combo moves to attack with. Overall I don't feel robbed by buying it so thats a win.
Looking forward to later on and maybe checking out the on-line questing and building my village or whatever it lets you do.
Oh, and as an aside, if anyone has a PS3 and cares to friend, my username on the network is DangerDwarf.

I was eying this at Wal Mart just a few days ago. Think I'll pick it up now.

Since its 20,000 I suggest "Captain Nemo" as his title. Beyond the obvious connection, he is one who sails on his own terms and ignores those he doesn't agree with...confident in his journey and goals.

I have curbed my VG playing but I am feeling the temptation with Dragon Age. I used to be a big fan of JRPGS but began to find them silly and with too little focus on fantasy. However my favorite games of Chrono Trigger/Cross, Final Fantasy 6 and Secret of Evermore are right next to me for when I need a break or think time.
I always thought some of the ideas behind the Chrono series would be excellent for a table top game if the right system would present itself.

AD&D per se is as dead a system as Latin is a language, while the C&C game has much the same spirit and nearly the same mechanics. --Gary Gygax 8/16/06

Dragon Age is a fun game with a great story and fantastic environments. It suffers greatly, however, from bugs and poor mechanics.
The A.I. is god-awful for your allies. They use a system similar to FF12's Gambits, but they do not work well at all. The enemy scaling with you makes sure you never have an absolutely easy time, but it varies greatly depending on the situation. I have sometimes thought that my attributes actually do nothing.
In one occasion I was fighting bandits with the best sword and heavy armor in the game. I smacked a bandit for 47 damage, and he hit me for 58. What the hell was he wielding?
I ran through the game totally without Game FAQS or guide books or anything along those lines and at times felt like without prior knowledge of the best ways to build a character I was making the game too hard.
I get really pissed off at the AI, and I mean REALLY pissed off. With the jerky menu system it is a cumbersome process to manually assign the actions of your allies, and in the later stages when you can get blown down quickly by archers and mages you sort of need the kind of support an ally archer can give.
All in all, I would still recommend it, but save often because until you find the perfect mix of what works and what does not, you run a 50/50 chance of winning every fight with ease, or getting decimated in seconds. It varies that much.
Now that I have beat the game I have for my second play through just walked through everything.
White Knight Chronicles was a must buy for me, Level 5, the developer, has made some great titles. Plus since I own almost every console RPG ever released in the US I have an obligation.
