Favorite things in the Crusader

Post by alcyone »

Pretty much the main reason I read the Crusader is for the Airdhe articles. The ongoing saga of Meltowg and the accompanying monsters with stats fire my imagination and give me a great idea how to present the "feel" of the setting. I am not running Haunted Highlands right now, but when I do, I am sure I'll be combing back issues for every bit of flavor I can wring out of that too.

I think the Crusader is an appropriate vehicle for helping to glue the various worlds together, highlighting similarities and points of connection between Airdhe, Haunted Highlands, Tainted Lands, and between game mechanics (An article on how to leverage your Castles and Crusades know-how to quickly get a StarSIEGE game going would be great.)

I appreciate the little roast at the end written by an anonymous Troll Lord each issue. I like to know a bit about the people making the game happen and what inspires and frustrates them.

Because, frankly, I buy what Troll Lord sells not just because it's a good product; I have lots of good roleplaying products, many of which give me about the same tabletop experience. It's because the people running the show, and the community around the games have some great stories to back up their opinions on gaming, some of which I share and some of which I enthusiastically and happily disagree.

I appreciate the Airdhe setting, because it came from the table of real gamers, who had their own Bigbys and Mordenkainens in the making, and I'd like to build on that, especially while the world is still alive and growing. I think this is one of TLG's strengths, in a way, it feels like we've all played at the same table (and with all of these cozy cons, I guess a lot of people have.)

I appreciate the articles from gamers from the Old Days, though I'd rather see only one such per issue. Too many articles on writing and selling RPGs makes me wonder; are you trying to give birth to some competition? :)

I don't mind seeing articles on other games and settings. I strongly prefer that they are games and settings that support SIEGE.

I think I am missing a lot of potential articles that are getting eaten by the CKG. Once that's out, I'd love to see more in that arena; house ruling, adjudicating strange mechanics, even excerpts or commentaries on posts from the Keepers forum.

If I could rate this post, I would give it 5 stars on the feedback meter.

I have yet to purchase a Crusader Mag, but I think I'm going to start.

The Aihrde material, for sure. I love it. Particularly the monsters as they have been presented in the Crusader. I have used many of them over the past year or so. Just great, imaginative work. Some Crusader issues have better articles than others, but overall it's a worthy magazine.

My all-time favorite article was the gingerbread tower one (I think C. Stiles wrote it as a mini-adventure).

Agree, this thread (Aergraith's post) is a good one...

Nice post Aergraith...
I have read (Yes, even here on these forum boards) some complaints about the magazine (Not a lot; but several) and do not agree with them.

I like the magazine and look forward to each months issue arriving in my mail box inside the big white envelope.

Yes, I am a subscriber to the Crusader Magazine and I plan to continue as a subscriber next year too.

Although I have almost EVERY issue (have 2 copies of many of the earlier issues) I do not have issue No. 1.
And I cannot find a copy for a reasonable price either.

I do have the PDF of Issue one... But they are not like the real thing (IMO).

If anyone wants any back issues, I do believe that most back-issues are still available from TLG.

Except Issue one of course.

Maybe it was just a short run of reprints, but Issue #1 was included as part of the "Crusading Noel" holiday bundle during the December sale. You may want to call and see if there are any still about.

I wholeheartedly agree. I mainly get the Crusader for all things Airhde. I would really like to see this as a venue for C&C but I also understand that it needs to pull in a diverse audience. That being said, TLG is slowly becoming more diverse, with Star Siege, Harvesters, and Fields of Battle. I would like to see one shot adventures in each issue, or something similar. Pinnacle has Savage Worlds One Sheet Adventures, which I think is a great concept; something like this could easily go in each issue. One month could be C&C, another month could be Harvesters, and the next could be, I don't know, maybe a Fields of Battle scenario.

At any rate, I agree also that the guys behind TLG and the community around them are what brings me here. Oh sure, the game is a great game, but let me be honest...there are a lot of great games to play out there. C&C happens to be one of my favorite, sure, but it is the people that make me come back and call this place my rpg home.

You know there was some bitching, earlier last year, about the lack of finished equipment/starships... whatever in StarSeige. The Crusader could be the perfect vehicle for that. There doesn't seem to be a whole lot of interest by TLG to create an equipment book for SS so you could do the same concept that they are doing with Creatures of Aihrde only builds for SS.

Speaking of which, I guess I like The Creatures of Aihrde as a consistent article. I don't read Tales of Rings of Brass and the other stuff just really depends what it is.
