Finally got the PHB

Post by Lord Dynel »

Well, my FLGS has finally come through. After weeks and weeks of pressure, I got the call on Tuesday and went down yesterday and finally picked up a copy of the hardback PHB, 4th printing (the GenCon version has held me to now).

I must say, it brought a tear to my eye...

Can you tell us what you like about it?

Whats to like about it? Primarily the layout is much better, much easier on the eyes, plus it has the full write up of the new Barbarian, fighters can finally do Combat Dominance of a full 1 HD creature ( , very lame! House Rules!), and the new Illusionist spells are in it, plus its a hard cover.

Since its 20,000 I suggest "Captain Nemo" as his title. Beyond the obvious connection, he is one who sails on his own terms and ignores those he doesn't agree with...confident in his journey and goals.

I hope to have the same reaction when I get the flipbook.

I'm not sure what you mean by "very lame house rules" can you explain?

Its "Very lame! House Rules!" Meaning I, and pretty much every one I game with, agrees that Combat Dominance, as written, is very lame. So we all have a house rule for it.

If you want to see my version, I have my house rules linked to in my sig.

Well, I like the multiclass rules. I like the redone barbarian. I even like most of the new illusionist spells, but I've changed the illusionist cure spells. They now act as various False Life spells of varying power:
Cure Light Wounds -> Lesser False Life (1 min/level, 1d10 temporary hp)
Cure Serious Wounds -> False Life (same duration, 3d10 temporary hp)
Cure Critical Wounds -> Greater False Life (same duration, 5d10 temporary hp)

(I've also considered naming them False Life I, False Life II, and False Life III)
For Heal, I've replaced it with a spell called Superior Invisibility (from the 3.5 D&D supplement, Spell Compendium). What this does is make the target of the spell completely invisible and undetectable, except by touch, doesn't end if subject attacks, and also makes them immune to detection methods (detect illusion, see invisibility, faerie fire, and the like)except for true seeing.

But yeah, I'm glad to finally have the freaking hardback. I gave the guy a list of other stuff (Umbrage Saga, new module, and new Wyrms), so hopefully I can keep the C&C ball rolling with this guy. He did well for a while, but then he spazzed out, so I'm trying to get him back on the right track.

The flipbook is my go-to C&C book now. I love it.

I got the Castles & Crusades; Player's Hand Book. (4th ed.) After reading it I came to two conclusions.

(1) What a great System. Has a real old "Gather at the kitchen table and game the night away." feel.

(2) WOTC really missed the boat with 3e, 3.5, and 4e D&D
Scream and charge is not a tactic.

The 4th Print of the PHB ranks very close to Perfect Product for me. One of my favorite RPG books out there and I enjoy just flipping through it.

I like that the flip book is a one trick pony. However, I am not a terrible fan of having to flip it over. I suppose though that this is actually a good thing... I mean, if I flip it, the players know I'm using the real monsters and not something I just invented to kill them.
