Read an RPG Book in Public Week

Post by huds0n »

Read an RPG Book in Public Week is an event that happens three times a year, during the weeks surrounding March 4th, July 27th, and October 1st (starting on the Sunday on or before, and ending on the Saturday on or after). During these weeks, roleplaying enthusiasts are encouraged to take their favorite RPG rulebooks out with them and read them in public -- on the bus, in the coffee shop, at lunch, at the park, or anywhere (as long as it isn't disruptive to work, school, church, or any other functions).

The point is to make the roleplaying hobby more visible, to get it "out of the basement" and into public areas where more people can see it. This will make others more aware of the hobby - some may ask you what your book is about, giving you the opportunity to explain the hobby to them. A few of those may be interested enough to try it themselves. Former gamers may see what you're reading and think about the great times they used to have with roleplaying, and possibly even try it again.

I'll be doing two books a day (or try to at least). So how about it for the rest of you?

We're on lockdown at the unit and shaking down. I'll have all my bosses confiscate the RPG books and deposit them on my desk.

I don't need a special week to pull out a role playing book. I tend to do it a lot, simply because I like to read them.

I got detention in school in the 7th grade for reading one of the First Quest AD&D modules during lunch.

The principal ended up throwing it away "for my own good."

I'd find that man now and beat his ass.

And I try to be as public as I with my rpg books. I work near a mall and maybe I can hit the food court this week with some rpgs...but of course they closed the bookstore there, so that culls impulse buys.

I have no problem showing the world I'm a geek and reading my RPG books. It's the whole 'going out in public' thing that turns me off. Can I take pictures of me reading my books and posted them on my Facebook page? That's about as close as I want to get with the public.

If road signs and Facebook are any indication of this, I would say your anser to be: yes.

"Can the public even read?"

Not a problem -

a) there are many pretty pictures on and in our RPG books,

b) if members of the public roll on the appropriate table,

they'll get "read & write", yes? See, problem solved!!

Day 1,

My two choices were, Dragon Warriors and of course, C&C. We got quite a few looks from other patrons at McCalister's Deli today at lunch. And even a couple of the "hey i know what that is" nods from a few. Overall it was funny!

Are you sure the looks weren't because someone was taking a picture of you reading a book?

Obviously, you don't know McBain. He has paparazzi follow him around.

Thats asking a helluva lot man. I founded the Career Professionals Closet Gamer Society just for the people who abide by Gandalfs wise words "Keep it secret...Keep it safe" lol.

My circle of friends are also professionals who have to keep a lid on their rpg hobby. I think a lot of gamers who either work for themselves or in an environment where people frowning upon you doesn't affect your income, promotion status, client base, and so on. But for some of us, the stigma of rpg's can really hurt us professionally. My buddy Dan is our village president now, and is a middle executive at a big company in a nearbye city. My buddy Brian, a lawyer, keeps it a secret as well. For those who don't see why it has to be kept on the down low, well...I don't know what to tell you. You don't live in our world (and I envy the hell out of yours...) I for one am a cop, and if I never want a promotion, then sure, I'll bring some rpg books to work. But because how we are percieved (accurate or not) dictates everything in our jobs. Brian said its sad that the public would be much more understanding if they found out their lawyer had a mistress rather than a lawyer that plays D&D (*gasp* he plays what??)

Ah the professional world. It really sucks when you can't totally be yourself.

I am letting myself get a little bolder now though, and have GenCon pics up on my FaceBook. I think as I get closer to sliding out of law enforcement and into a teaching job, I care a little less what the guys at work know about me, and some even know I am going to GenCon again this year (they're not entirely sure what that is though, lol)

Boy, am I glad I decided to stay amateur if being professional means you have to have all these dumb-ass d20-like rules... without the prestige.

Around the KC area there is a very open attitude towards gaming. It seems that everyone at Sprint plays Warhammer, Magic, or 4E.

Lots of tattooed executives around here.

Curiously, though, playing older games is still a subject to be ostracized over. I ran a game of AD&D at Denny's for some younger guys a couple years ago and I had an RPGA guy come over and tell me that 1: I was playing in the wrong area of Greyhawk for KC, and 2: I was playing in a non-sanctioned edition of the game.

I told him to go f**k himself.

He told me I would never be allowed in the RPGA.

I still lose sleep every night.

I have since been apologized to by the RPGA for that guy, which I appreciated.

But I have seen non 4E players actually be ousted from a game at a gamestore because the table was wanted for use for 40k. I respect the businessman's perspective about that, but surely those AD&D players buy other things?

Speaking of game stores, my friend is about to list up a lot more old AD&D stuff on ebay. There are some rare finds. There is a 1E Unearthed Arcana and Oriental Adventures in awesome shape. The Dragonlance Gazateer, The SpellJammer box with all the little ships. He is putting it up a bit at a time.
http://shop.ebay.com/jwsuber/m.html it's all here, or will be. I picked through and got what I wanted already.

Does this ice cream have cake, or maybe it is cake flavored ice cream?
