My first LL game.
My first LL game.
characters are
F elf thief
M human wizard
F human fighter
M human cleric of the god of time magic and death
M human cleric of discordia
These are all 30+ yr old professionals.
I began the game with the following narration,
"After many long and weary days of travel along the kings road you find yourself only one more night away from your distination, the small town of Holly which is said to be a boom town for adventurers exploring the newly discovered tower and dungeon ruins of the ancient wizard Thealonus. Having finished the evening meal you find your self sitting around a fire with some of your fellow travelers. You take this time to introduce yourself to one another."
Ok, so at this time the players begin explaining their goals and who they are in order until we get to the cleric of time. when it is his turn the player just turns his back towards the rest of the group and says nothing.
WTF?

Since its 20,000 I suggest "Captain Nemo" as his title. Beyond the obvious connection, he is one who sails on his own terms and ignores those he doesn't agree with...confident in his journey and goals.

I wouldn't mind too much if someone played a recluse, as long as they contributed in other ways. If the guy sits there like a bump on a log and says, "hey, I'm role playing," then he may need some instruction on role playing. If there's a concept, a method to his madness, then I'd say give it some time to see where he goes. Don't stifle him, if he's doing it for a good reason.

Well, you did state he was a Cleric of Discordia. He's just causing discord!

Sounds weird to me. Is the player touched in the head or otherwise impaired? Is he a Vampire or Werewolf player? Maybe he is just trying to be dark and brooding. If so, beat him unconscious with a phonebook, less bruising.

Actually it was the cleric of Thanos God of time magic and death! (sue me already I came up with the god on short notice)
The cleric of discord was all on it until he introduced himself as "the Chaotic" and I informed him that he could get knifed for that and then showed him the pic of Emrikel the chaotic.

Yep. Sounds like a case of "One big fantasy campaign, five different realities."
I now introduce some overarching tie-in, be it an organization or a business, that ties the group together and gets them to design their PCs as a cohesive whole. Barring that, I help steer them that way.
We may have anti-heroes in my game, but there's no room for anti-social heroes.

You get it. I was worried it was me.

I made a player go blind after gaining a prestige class once. If I say there are no dragons, that of course means there are no Dragon Disciples. So Mephistophales gave him his power. Turd.
I even gave another player a Robe of Eyes that would only work for his character just to rub it in. If you played with this munchkin, you would feel no sympathy and agree with my methods. I am typically a fun DM, just do not press me into stupid crap that I do not want to include.
Like his g/f wanted to play a Binder with the Accerrak Vestige...in Greyhawk. I added role-playing problems to that and they got mad and stuff.
Anyhow, what are we talking about?

Why would you play with someone like that in the first place?

I like having an even number? That's basically it. I have the same salvo of players I draw upon here and there. Surprisingly, that same player does well in C&C. It is about the temptation. If he plays 3.5 he cannot help but want to optimize. If you take away that option, and make it all about character, he prioritizes his off-paper stuff.
He has Asperger's Syndrome, so he's a bit off, but we've all learned to work with him. He has been struck by lightning twice, btw. That is something I like to mention. He was also bit by a rabid racoon.
I also got him drunk for the first time and made a video of him explaining the Spiderman Clone Saga. It was funny.
So, that's why we keep him around...shock value?

IMHO: At this point, it's not too late to fix the damage if you decide to "rewrite" the campaign and introduce an organization or element that gets people on track with slightly altered backgrounds for the PCs.
And DON'T BE SHY, just don't name names, on why your introducing the element. Say "One of the cool reason I've included x is that we all on board with the theme and the teamwork that makes this game cool."
The best elements like this also have built in excuses for why PC vanish when players are absent and where new PC come from who are up to speed on the adventure.
Some examples:
- Crew to a ship
- Explorers' Club
- Merchant Guild
- Merc Company
- "God Squad" (Essentially the Baron/King's trouble shooters with holy support i.e. your usual DnD group with both noble and church sponsorship)
- "Indianian Jones" team ... Snagging artifacts for a museum or scholar's group
etc.

That was one of the things that killed me in 3.5 was that half my players couldn't resist this temptation. And yet I was the bad guy because I said, "no" after they bought a new book to the table.
My current C&C group, though, has players who are trying to find ways to get their "new stuff" fix.
Some things they've done:
- Brought older editions for suggestions on spell durations
- RPGed to get non-class abilities for extra toys (found God so they could petition for 0-level orisions)
- Dived into local business and economics to build merchant empires (this about drove me nuts. LOL! I'm running an adventure movie, not SimCity.)
- Suggest feats as rules for combat maneuvers.
I've learned two things:
For some, delivering on their requests only leads to more, bigger requests. (It's never enough) While others play with their new toy for a while and then forget about it.
