Tales of Earthsea

I just watched the animated Tales of Earthsea movie done by Studio Ghibli in 2006.

I am a Miyazaki fan of long standing. I can only conjecture if the subject matter of the story was dealt with well. I have not read the Earthsea books (I have been meaning to).

Has anyone seen the movie and read any of the books?

If so, what did you think of the film?

I have the live-action movie, but have not watched it yet. If I recall, it was done as a mini-series, of sorts, on Sci-Fi. I don't know how it ties in with the animated movie or the books, having no experience with those.

I have only seen the blurb on the back of the cover of that DVD, but if the blurb is anything like the contents, it possibly has even less to do with Earthsea than the SciFi version, which was more or less nothing but the name.

Which is fine with me, since I have no vested interest. I got it solely for the genre.

I've not seen the movie... but I've read the books, which I enjoyed quite a bit. I will check this out.

I read the books years ago and have fond memories of them. I like the fact that the wizard school has all of those specialists, each with certain duties and whatnot. And the tombs book is neat because it's a lot like a dungeon crawl adventure. I also like the "true name" concept, although I've yet to find a good way to properly work it into a campaign world.

I know that the scifi channel movie didn't get great reviews, but I liked it. Maybe parts didn't quite agree with my mental picture from the books, but that happens with pretty much every movie adaptation I've ever seen.

Overall, good stuff.

Wikipedia has information about the author's take on both the film and the tv miniseries. Apparently she liked the film, but did not think it was a good adaptation, and she hated the miniseries as she was deceived about its production and it had nothing to do with her books but some proper nouns.

I liked the animated film. I am not the type to rage over film adaptations. I like the comparison. It is neat to see print characters come to life on screen, even if they say and act totally wrong.
