The Winters Dark

Post by Julian Grimm »

So I have been rereading my Codex and I am stumped on this. Was the WD an eternal night or was it more like I have been imagining it a period of deep winter with short overcast days and long dark nights where all sorts of strange beings walked the world.

Interesting question. The Codex mentions Unklar blowing a cold chill across Erde which caused a fog - The Shroud of Darkness or the Cold Mist which hung over the land for 800 years (page 31 - 2nd to last paragraph)!

Last paragraph - "The Winter Dark settled upon the land."

I have seen reference to both a long night and long winter. My vote is long winter since later it explains Unklar provided new types of plants to grow.

Unless they grew by cold they would have had to had some sunlight to live.

Just an note to the trolls. I'd love to see a Winters Dark sourcebook or campaign option. I think this would appeal to many who want the info and to run a campaign in that time period.

Annnnnd the "Understatement Of The Year" award goes to.....

lol, seriously! This would rock! My current C&C campaign deals with (dun dun duuuuuhn) the return of the Horned One! Or at least...the baddies trying to open the Paths of Umbra once again and bring ol' horny back.
I was keeping a campaign log for awhile...but then so many things started happening that I couldn't keep track of it all. But yeah, there's the Crna Ruk, a Chaos Plague (ala my WHFRP conversion notes), witches (ala my work-in-progress character class) and....firearms! I'm having a blast, but I think my players are going to have me committed soon...

....hope they have dice in the asylum....

If you are running a return of Unklar campaign, check page 48, left column third para.

Now known as 'The First Crime' and more than likely the source of Unklar's return.

I'm allllll over that and already have it figured into my campaign. That's what I love about this setting - there's such an awesome history that actually has a bearing on the present. You guys rock so much...lol

My campaign is kind of the opposite, its an attempt to return the All Father to life. With many of the forces of Erde opposed to such an event getting in the PC's way. Even some "surprise" powers will be opposed to such an event. The witch Queen/Aufstrag "A" series modules are/were really just going to be a lead in to learning enough to travel to the void, and other places, to learn how to bring the All Father back to life. Which does involve a possible return of the Horned God. Both because it made sense to have that as a warm up, and I was guessing the "A" series would culminate with a climax set up around stopping Unklars return.

Yes, I think this will require going beyond 20th level, and thanks to my 3E experiences with f'ed up and badly broken Epic level play, I think I am well prepared to handle it.

I also think my wife and kids are up to the challenge. As their PC's, of course.
Since its 20,000 I suggest "Captain Nemo" as his title. Beyond the obvious connection, he is one who sails on his own terms and ignores those he doesn't agree with...confident in his journey and goals.
Sounds obvious to me! -Gm Michael

That is interesting. It's also something I have thought of. Keep us posted on how it goes.
